History of Saint Mary of Egypt

April 6 @ 6:00 am - 6:00 pm

Saint Mary of Egypt is venerated in both Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions, and her story holds great significance for Christians in these faith communities.

History of Saint Mary of Egypt (Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Perspective):

Saint Mary of Egypt, born in the 4th century in Egypt, lived a life of sin and indulgence in her youth. She became a prostitute and lived a life of extreme immorality. However, her life dramatically changed when, at the age of 29, she traveled to Jerusalem to join a pilgrimage to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. When she tried to enter the church, she was mysteriously prevented from doing so by an unseen force.

This incident deeply troubled her, and after a moment of reflection, she realized that her sinful life was the reason for her exclusion. She immediately prayed for forgiveness and vowed to abandon her sinful ways. After making this promise, the barrier lifted, and she was able to enter the church and venerate the Holy Cross.

Mary then withdrew into the desert to live a life of repentance and asceticism. She spent over 40 years in solitude, prayer, and fasting, completely renouncing her former sinful life. Despite enduring severe physical hardships and temptations, she grew in holiness, finding peace through her dedication to God.

She was later discovered by a monk named Zosimus, who was astonished by her story of repentance. Before her death, she asked Zosimus to visit her again the following year, where she passed away and was buried by him.

Her life serves as a powerful testimony to the mercy of God and the possibility of redemption, even for those who have lived lives of great sin.

Feast Day and Sunday Dedication in Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Traditions:

In both the Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches, Saint Mary of Egypt is commemorated on April 1st. However, her feast day is most commonly celebrated on the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent, which is dedicated to her as a reminder of the transformative power of repentance.

The Fifth Sunday of Great Lent is referred to as the Sunday of Saint Mary of Egypt, and it serves as an encouragement to all Christians during the season of Lent to reflect on their own repentance and renewal. Her life of dramatic transformation—moving from sin to holiness—reminds the faithful that no matter how far one may have fallen, sincere repentance can lead to salvation.

This Sunday is a particularly important time in the liturgical calendar for both Eastern Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians. It calls the faithful to recognize the need for spiritual renewal and the possibility of redemption, regardless of one’s past mistakes.

Significance in Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Traditions:

The story of Saint Mary of Egypt has a special place in the Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions, particularly during the season of Great Lent. It illustrates the importance of repentance and the grace of God, showing that anyone, regardless of their past, can be transformed through sincere faith and penitence. Her example teaches that God’s mercy is boundless, and that through prayer, fasting, and humility, one can experience spiritual renewal.

Her feast day and the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent remind Christians that the path to holiness is open to all, even those who have lived lives of great sin. It is a call to all to embrace the season of Lent as a time of deep reflection, repentance, and renewal of their commitment to God.
