A Joyful Evening of Malanka Pushchenia at Saint Nicholas
Tonight, Saturday, January 31 2026, our parish community came together for a heartwarming evening of Malanka Pushchenia at Saint Nicholas! Families and friends gathered to enjoy laughter, fellowship, and, of course, delicious pizza. It was a night filled with games, music, and memories — a wonderful reminder of the joy we share as a parish family.
What is Malanka?
Malanka is a beloved Ukrainian folk celebration marking the eve of the New Year according to the Julian calendar, traditionally held on January 13, the night before Old New Year. In Ukraine, it has long been a festive time of music, dancing, costumes, and playful performances. Participants often dress as folkloric characters or animals, bringing humor, blessing, and joy to the community. Today, many Ukrainian communities continue to celebrate Malanka with dinners, dances, and social gatherings — a chance to welcome the new year with laughter and good cheer.
And what is Pushchenia?
Pushchenia, or the beginning of the Lenten fast period, reminds us of the spiritual preparation that follows the festive season. It is a time to focus on prayer, reconciliation, and self-reflection as we move closer to the great celebration of Easter (Pascha). While Malanka fills our hearts with joy and community, Pushchenia calls us gently to balance celebration with spiritual growth, helping us enter the Lenten season with intention and devotion.
Our parish event beautifully combined these traditions. We laughed together, shared a meal, and strengthened our bonds as a community — all while honoring our Ukrainian heritage and faith. The evening was a success thanks to everyone who attended and all the volunteers who helped organize this memorable night.
As we move from festive Malanka into the reflective season of Pushchenia, let us carry with us the joy of togetherness and the grace of spiritual preparation. Saint Nicholas continues to be a place where tradition, faith, and community meet — a place where every gathering becomes a blessing.
Радісний вечір Маланки-Пущення у Святого Миколая
Минулої суботи наша парафія зібралася на душевний та святковий вечір Маланки-Пущення у храмі Святого Миколая! Родини та друзі разом насолоджувалися сміхом, спілкуванням і, звичайно, смачною піцою. Це був вечір ігор, музики та теплих спогадів — чудове нагадування про радість спільнотного життя в нашій парафії.
Що таке Маланка?
Маланка — це улюблене українське народне свято, яке відзначає напередодні Нового року за юліанським календарем, традиційно 13 січня — у ніч перед Старим Новим роком. В Україні це завжди був веселий час музики, танців, костюмів та жартівливих виступів. Учасники часто одягалися у народні або тваринні образи, приносячи гумор, благословення та радість спільноті. Сьогодні багато українських громад продовжують святкувати Маланку вечерею, танцями та дружніми зустрічами — чудова нагода розпочати новий рік із веселощами та гарним настроєм.
А що таке Пущення?
Пущення — це початок постового періоду, що нагадує нам про духовну підготовку перед великим святом Воскресіння Христового (Пасхи). Це час молитви, примирення та саморефлексії. Маланка наповнює наші серця радістю та спільнотністю, а Пущення м’яко закликає поєднувати святкування з духовним зростанням, щоб увійти у піст із відкритим серцем та наміром.
Наш парафіяльний вечір чудово поєднав ці традиції. Ми разом сміялися, ділилися трапезою та зміцнювали наші зв’язки — все це в дусі української спадщини та віри. Вечір пройшов успішно завдяки всім учасникам і волонтерам, які допомогли організувати цю незабутню подію.
Нехай, переходячи від веселої Маланки до розважливого Пущення, ми понесемо з собою радість спільності та благодать духовної підготовки. Храм Святого Миколая залишається місцем, де традиції, віра та спільнота зустрічаються — місцем, де кожна зустріч стає благословенням.
