Nadhrobne (Надгробне) – The Service at the Tomb

What Is Nadhrobne?

Nadhrobne means “at the tomb.”
It is a special prayer service where the Church gathers around the Plashchanitsia (Holy Shroud), which represents Jesus’ tomb.

This service usually happens:

  • On Holy Saturday
  • Or sometimes before Paschal Matins on Easter Sunday

It helps us stand with Christ in the tomb and prepare for the joy of His Resurrection.

Where Does This Service Come From?

  • Nadhrobne comes from early Christian traditions in Jerusalem, where believers prayed at Christ’s tomb.
  • In the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, it is part of the Trebnyk (Требник), the Church’s ritual book for prayers, blessings, and memorial services.
  • It is closely related to funeral prayers (Panakhyda) and monastic daily prayers (Horologion), adapted to the burial of Christ.

Even though it feels devotional, it is an official part of the Church’s liturgy.

What Happens During the Service?

1. Psalms and Hymns

  • Psalms like Psalm 62, 118, 140, 148–150
  • Hymns reflecting Christ’s death, burial, and the hope of Resurrection

2. Gospel Reading and Canticles

  • Gospel about the women at the tomb (Myrrhophores)
  • Canticles like the Nunc dimittis

3. Prayers and Litanies

  • Special prayers for the dead and for salvation
  • Incensing of the tomb
  • Sometimes oil is poured over the tomb three times, reminding us of baptism and new life

4. Conclusion

  • Trisagion (Holy God)
  • Our Father
  • Final hymns and veneration of the tomb
  • Sometimes a small procession around the Plashchanitsia

How Is Nadhrobne Different from the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil?

Nadhrobne St. Basil’s Liturgy
Reflective and prayerful Eucharistic and celebratory
Focuses on Christ in the tomb Proclaims salvation history
Uses psalms, hymns, readings Central Eucharist with Anaphora
Emphasizes waiting and silence Emphasizes Resurrection joy
Optional procession and veneration Communion of the faithful

Why Nadhrobne Is Important

  • It helps us enter the silence of Holy Saturday.
  • It reminds us that Christ has truly died.
  • It prepares our hearts for the joy of Easter.
  • It connects us to early Christian and monastic traditions.

A Simple Way to Think About It

“Nadhrobne is when we gather at the tomb of Jesus. We pray, we wait, and we honor Him. We remember His death, but we trust that Resurrection and new life are coming.”
