SUMMARY:Feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God 7:00 PM Divine Liturgy
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Nativity of the Mother of God🕀 Monday\, September 8\, 2025Holy Day of Obligation | Feast of the Mother of God \n\n✥ A Joyous Dawn: The Birth of the Theotokos\nThe Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos—celebrated each year on September 8—marks the first great feast of the liturgical year in the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church (UGCC). It honors the birth of the Virgin Mary\, the one through whom salvation would enter the world. Her nativity is not recorded in Scripture but is preserved through the ancient Sacred Tradition of the Church. \nThe feast is a Holy Day of Obligation\, meaning all faithful are expected to attend Divine Liturgy in honor of Mary\, the Mother of God\, whose birth signals hope\, renewal\, and the beginning of the divine plan for human redemption. \n\n✥ Theological Significance\nThe birth of Mary to Saints Joachim and Anna\, a devout but elderly couple once thought barren\, is more than the story of a longed-for child—it is a turning point in salvation history. The Troparion beautifully proclaims: \n\n“Your nativity\, O Virgin Mother of God\,has made joy known to all the world\,for from you dawned the Sun of Righteousness\, Christ our God.” \n\nHer coming into the world prepared the way for the Incarnation of the Word\, through whom God would “abolish the curse” and “bestow on us eternal life.” \nThe Kontakion echoes this miraculous joy: \n\n“By your birth\, O immaculate one\,Joachim and Anna were freed from the reproach of childlessness\,and Adam and Eve from the corruption of death.” \n\nHer birth is celebrated not only as a gift to her parents\, but as a gift to all creation\, restoring hope to a fallen humanity. \n\n✥ Scriptural Reflections\nThough the Gospel of the day (Luke 10:38–42; 11:27–28) does not describe Mary’s birth\, it reflects her deepest identity as the one who hears and obeys the word of God: \n\n“Blessed is the womb that bore you…Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”(Luke 11:27–28) \n\nThis passage underscores that Mary’s true greatness lies not only in giving birth to Christ\, but in her perfect obedience to the will of God. She is the model disciple\, the new Eve who reverses the disobedience of the first. \n\n✥ Liturgical Highlights\n🕊 Troparion (Tone 4)\n\n“Your nativity\, O Virgin Mother of God\,has made joy known to all the world…” \n\nThis hymn expresses the cosmic joy of Mary’s birth\, which prepares the way for the “Sun of Righteousness”—Jesus Christ. \n🕊 Kontakion (Tone 4)\n\n“Joachim and Anna were freed from the reproach of childlessness…The barren one gives birth to the Mother of God…” \n\nIt praises God’s miraculous intervention in the lives of Joachim and Anna\, echoing biblical stories like those of Sarah and Hannah. \n\n✥ Prokeimenon & Alleluia\n\n“My soul magnifies the Lord\, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour.”(Luke 1:46–47) \n\n\n“Hear\, O daughter\, and see\, and incline your ear.”(Psalm 44:11) \n\nThese verses link Mary’s nativity with the Magnificat and with Old Testament prophecies of the Queen who stands at the King’s right hand. \n\n✥ Epistle – Philippians 2:5–11\nThe Epistle reminds us of the humility of Christ\, who\, though divine\, took on flesh—flesh that He received from Mary. Her fiat (Luke 1:38) made His self-emptying possible. \n\n“Though He was in the form of God…He humbled Himself… even to death on a cross.” \n\nMary’s birth leads directly to the Cross\, which leads to Resurrection. \n\n✥ Hymn to the Mother of God & Irmos\n\n“O my soul\, magnify the Virgin Mary\, born from a barren womb.” \n\n\n“Virginity is alien to mothers\,and childbearing is foreign to virgins;yet in you\, O Mother of God\, both came together.” \n\nThis powerful Irmos speaks of the mystery of Mary’s person: her miraculous birth and later virginal motherhood are signs of God’s intervention in nature\, making the impossible real for the sake of our salvation. \n\n✥ The UGCC Tradition\nIn the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church\, this feast is rich in symbolism and celebration. While it is not accompanied by special blessings of fruit or flowers as in some other Marian feasts\, it is observed with great joy and reverence: \n\n\nFestal Divine Liturgy with full Marian hymns. \n\n\nProcessions or icons of the Nativity of Mary displayed prominently in churches. \n\n\nEmphasis on family and fertility\, recalling Joachim and Anna’s long-awaited child. \n\n\nTraditionally\, many families may light candles or say prayers for couples struggling with infertility\, inspired by the miracle of Mary’s birth. \n\n\n\n✥ Communion Hymn\n\n“I will take the cup of salvation; and I will call upon the name of the Lord.”(Psalm 115:13) \n\nAs we receive Holy Communion on this great feast\, we unite ourselves with the grace-filled story of Mary’s life and offer our lives in thanksgiving and obedience\, just as she did. \n\n✥ Final Reflection: A Feast of Hope and New Beginnings\nThe Nativity of the Theotokos is not only a celebration of Mary—it is a celebration of God’s mercy and plan unfolding in time. Her birth brings to light the first sign of salvation\, a radiant promise that redemption is near. \nLet us join the chorus of the faithful throughout the centuries\, singing with joy: \n\n“Today is the beginning of our salvation!” \n\n\n✥ A Prayer for the Feast\n\nO Most Holy Mother of God\,You were born of righteous parents\,you became the living Temple of the Lord.On your holy birthday\, intercede for us\,that we may also be made vessels of grace\,obedient and faithful to the will of your Son. Amen. \n\n\nGlory be to Jesus Christ!

SUMMARY:Feast of the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross 10:00 AM
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross🕀 Sunday\, September 14\, 2025Holy Day of Obligation | Feast of the Lord | Day of Strict Fast(Abstention from meat and foods that contain meat) \n\n✥ Lifting Up the Cross: A Victory Through Death\nThe Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is one of the most solemn and profound celebrations in the Byzantine liturgical year. It commemorates both the discovery of the True Cross by St. Helena (in the 4th century) and the public veneration of the Cross in Jerusalem after its recovery from the Persians in the 7th century. \nYet more deeply\, this feast exalts the Cross itself—not as a symbol of defeat\, but as the instrument of Christ’s victory over sin\, death\, and hell. On this day\, the Church lifts high the Cross of Christ and proclaims to the world: \n\n“We bow in veneration to Your Cross\, O Master\, and we glorify Your holy Resurrection.” \n\n\n✥ The Cross: Paradox and Power\nIn the Epistle (1 Corinthians 1:18–24)\, St. Paul calls the Cross both foolishness and power: \n\n“The message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing\, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” \n\nThe world sees the Cross as weakness\, but through it\, God conquers death by dying. This paradox lies at the heart of Christian faith. The Cross is not simply a relic of Christ’s suffering\, but the Tree of Life planted in a world of death. \n\n✥ The Liturgical Proclamation\nThe feast begins with the bold refrain sung throughout the Liturgy: \n\n“To Your Cross\, O Master\, we bow in veneration\, and we glorify Your holy Resurrection.” \n\nThis replaces the Trisagion (the “Holy God” hymn)\, a rare and solemn shift in the Divine Liturgy\, emphasizing the centrality of the Cross in Christian life. \nThe Troparion is a triumphant invocation: \n\n“Save Your people\, O Lord\, and bless Your inheritance.Grant victory to Your faithful people against enemies\,and protect Your community by Your Cross.” \n\nIt is a plea for divine protection and a reminder that it is the Cross—not politics\, not power\, not ideology—that upholds and defends the Church. \n\n✥ Gospel: John 19:6–35 — The Passion in Full View\nThe Gospel on this feast recounts Christ’s Crucifixion\, not in summary but in full. We stand in reverence as the Church reads of Christ’s trial\, His condemnation\, His suffering\, and His death. The climax comes as we hear: \n\n“When Jesus had received the wine\, he said\, ‘It is finished.’Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” \n\nThis moment is not just the end of Jesus’ earthly life—it is the fulfillment of God’s plan\, the beginning of salvation\, and the birth of the Church from His pierced side\, flowing with blood and water. \n\n✥ Fasting on a Feast: A Spiritual Mystery\nThough most feast days are celebratory\, the Exaltation of the Cross is unique: it is also a day of strict fasting\, even when it falls on a Sunday (as it does in 2025). This fast is a sign of solemn awe before the Cross. It reflects the truth that resurrection comes only after crucifixion\, and glory follows suffering. \nThis tension between joy and sorrow is mirrored in the hymnography: \n\n“You were lifted on the Cross by Your own will\, O Christ our God…Grant victory through Your Cross\, the invincible sign of peace.” \n\n\n✥ The Cross in the UGCC Tradition\nIn the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church\, this feast is celebrated with particular solemnity: \n\n\nThe Cross is brought out in procession and placed in the center of the church\, often adorned with flowers and venerated by the faithful with prostrations. \n\n\nThe “Veneration of the Cross” service may follow the Divine Liturgy. \n\n\nFasting is observed rigorously despite the festal nature of the day\, a rare liturgical paradox. \n\n\nThis is a day of public remembrance and intercession\, often invoking Christ’s victory for peace in times of conflict and strength for the Church. \n\n\n\n✥ Hymn to the Mother of God & Irmos\n\n“O my soul\, magnify the most precious cross of the Lord.” \n\n\n“You are a mystical Paradise\, O Mother of God…Christ has planted the Tree of Life upon the earth: the Cross.” \n\nMary\, the Mother of God\, who stood faithfully by the Cross\, is invoked here as the Mystical Paradise\, for from her womb came the Fruit of salvation—Jesus Christ—who would hang upon the Tree of the Cross to heal the world. \n\n✥ Communion & Sending Forth\n\n“Let the light of Your countenance\, O Lord\, shine upon us.”(Psalm 4:7) \n\nEven at the Table of the Lord\, we are mindful that it is through the Cross we are brought to communion. The final hymn echoes the theme again: \n\n“To Your Cross\, O Master\, we bow in veneration\, and we glorify Your holy Resurrection.” \n\n\n✥ Final Reflection: The Cross Is the Path\nOn this holy and solemn day\, the Church lifts high the Sign of the Son of Man—the Cross—to proclaim that true glory comes through self-giving love\, and that eternal life is born from sacrificial death. \nLet us not shy away from our own crosses. Let us carry them in faith\, in silence\, and in hope\, for by them we\, too\, are being conformed to Christ. \n\n✥ A Prayer for the Feast\n\nO Lord Jesus Christ\,You freely ascended the Cross for the life of the world.May we never be ashamed of Your Cross\,but glorify it as the sign of Your love\,the throne of Your victory\,and the hope of our salvation.Amen. \n\n\nGlory be to Jesus Christ! \n\n✥ Sacred Traditions of the Feast\n1. 🌿 The Procession and Elevation of the Cross\nOne of the most vivid and solemn features of the feast is the procession of the Cross into the center of the church: \n\n\nThe Cross is adorned with fresh flowers\, herbs (especially basil)\, and candles. \n\n\nIt is carried solemnly during the Liturgy or during the Matins service\, accompanied by incense and hymns such as: \n\n“To Your Cross\, O Master\, we bow in veneration\, and we glorify Your holy Resurrection.” \n\n\n\nThe priest or bishop then elevates the Cross high\, turning to the four corners of the church\, blessing the people in each direction. \n\n\nSometimes this rite is accompanied by prostrations or deep bows from the faithful\, emphasizing reverence and repentance. \n\n\nThis action reflects the historical event of the recovery of the True Cross in Jerusalem (AD 628) and its public exaltation by Patriarch Zacharias. \n\n2. 🌸 Decorating the Cross with Flowers and Herbs\n\n\nThe Cross is beautifully adorned\, not as a symbol of cruelty\, but as the Tree of Life\, now victorious. \n\n\nIn some traditions\, basil (Greek: vasilikon\, “royal”) is used\, which according to legend was found growing at the site where St. Helena discovered the True Cross in the 4th century. \n\n\nFlowers are placed not just for beauty\, but to show that death has been transformed into life. \n\n\n\n3. 🕯️ Veneration of the Cross\n\n\nAfter the elevation\, the faithful approach the Cross on their knees or with prostrations\, to kiss and venerate it in silence. \n\n\nIt is a deeply moving moment of personal devotion and reflection\, often accompanied by the singing of: \n\n“We venerate Your Cross\, O Christ\, and we glorify Your holy Resurrection.” \n\n\n\nThis mirrors the veneration on Good Friday\, but here\, it is infused with triumph—the Cross is now a sign of victory\, not defeat. \n\n4. 🍞 Strict Fasting — Like Good Friday\nThough it’s a feast\, September 14 is a strict fast day in the Byzantine tradition (even when it falls on a Sunday\, as in 2025). This rare combination of feast and fast carries powerful meaning: \n\n\nJust like Good Friday\, we fast in awe and reverence before the mystery of the Cross. \n\n\nThe UGCC tradition observes abstinence from meat and animal products (dairy and eggs)\, and many faithful may fast from oil and wine as well. \n\n\nThe fast emphasizes that salvation came at a great cost\, and it invites us to participate in Christ’s self-emptying love. \n\n\nThis is one of the very few Sundays in the year (besides possibly Great Lent and Holy Week Sundays) when strict fasting is retained despite the resurrectional character of the day. \n\n5. 🔔 A Day of Mourning and Victory\nThe mood of the feast is both somber and triumphant: \n\n\nIn Byzantine churches\, dark vestments may be worn (or sometimes red\, symbolizing martyrdom). \n\n\nThe faithful remember the suffering of Christ\, but also proclaim His resurrection and glorification. \n\n\nThis duality of grief and glory is unique to this feast and shapes how it’s observed in both public worship and private devotion. \n\n\n\n✥ Family and Parish Traditions\nIn homes and parishes\, people may also: \n\n\nPrepare flower garlands for the Cross. \n\n\nRead the Passion narratives or meditate on the Stations of the Cross. \n\n\nFast from social media\, distractions\, or luxury as a way of uniting more closely to Christ. \n\n\nDecorate a home icon corner with a cross\, candles\, and flowers to remind the household of the feast’s solemnity. \n\n\n\n✥ A Note on the Cross as a “Second Pascha”\nThe Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross is sometimes called a “Second Good Friday.” It reminds us that: \n\nThere is no Resurrection without the Cross. There is no true life without self-sacrifice.There is no glory without love laid down. \n\n\n✥ Final Reflection\nAs the Cross is lifted high before our eyes\, we are reminded that Christ’s love is not abstract—it is visible\, tangible\, and pierced. His suffering was real. His victory is real. And our participation in it—through fasting\, veneration\, and prayer—is our path to true life. \n\n\nHere are some fun and fascinating facts about the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme (Holy Cross in Jerusalem) in Rome — perfect for sharing with younger generations! \n\n🗺️ Location & Origins\n\n\nThe basilica stands on the Sessorian Palace\, once belonging to Emperor Constantine’s mother\, Empress Helena (early 300s AD) Moovit+14Wikipedia+14Flickr+14. \n\n\nThe floor was inlaid with actual soil from Jerusalem\, making the site feel like a piece of the Holy City in the heart of Rome Rome Actually+2johnsanidopoulos.com+2Horarios de Misa+2. \n\n\n\n🪵 Relic Treasure House\nEmpress Helena returned from her pilgrimage with a stunning collection of Passion relics\, many of which are still venerated today Flickr+2primematters.com+2The Catholic Traveler+2: \n\n\nFragments of the True Cross (three small pieces) \n\n\nA Holy Nail from the Crucifixion \n\n\nTwo thorns from the Crown of Thorns \n\n\nThe Titulus Crucis – the INRI inscription board (“Jesus of Nazareth\, King of the Jews”) Mapcarta+15Wikipedia+15Wikipedia+15Lonely Planet+8Wikipedia+8primematters.com+8Horarios de Misa \n\n\nA fragment of the penitent thief’s cross \n\n\nSoil from Calvary\, beneath the Chapel of St. Helena walksinrome.com+4The Catholic Traveler+4sightsofrome.blogspot.com+4 \n\n\nThese relics are securely preserved behind glass in a dedicated modern Chapel of Relics Wikipediawalksinrome.com. \n\n🕯️ Legends & Stories\n\n\n🧙‍♀️ Miracle test: To identify the True Cross\, Helena touched three crosses to a dying woman. This sacred time of prayer is open to all\, providing a space for reflection\, devotion\, and community connection. \nA Sacred Tradition \nThe rosary is a powerful form of prayer that has been cherished in the Catholic tradition for centuries. By praying the rosary\, we meditate on the life of Jesus Christ and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This beautiful devotion helps us deepen our relationship with God\, fostering a sense of peace and spiritual clarity. In our parish\, we honour this tradition by offering a communal rosary prayer before each Divine Liturgy. \nPreparing for Worship \nThe Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy serves as an essential preparation for the liturgical celebration that follows. As we come together to pray\, we create an atmosphere of reverence and unity within our community. Each bead of the rosary represents a moment of contemplation\, allowing us to reflect on the mysteries of faith and the love of God. \nThis time of prayer is not only a personal journey but also a collective experience that strengthens our bonds as a parish community. We encourage everyone to participate\, whether you are a long-time member of our parish or a newcomer seeking a deeper understanding of our faith. \nPraying for Peace and Guidance \nDuring the rosary\, we lift our intentions to God\, praying for our families\, our communities\, and those in need of comfort and healing. In particular\, we focus our prayers on peace in our world\, seeking divine intervention in times of conflict and unrest. As we pray\, we remember those suffering from the challenges in Ukraine and around the globe\, placing our trust in God’s grace and mercy. \nThe act of praying the rosary invites us to pause and reflect on the blessings in our lives while acknowledging the struggles we face. Together\, we ask for strength and guidance\, fostering a spirit of hope that transcends our individual experiences. \nA Welcoming Community \nWe invite all members of our parish and newcomers alike to join us for the Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy. This gathering is open to everyone\, regardless of your familiarity with the rosary or your level of faith. Our community is built on love\, support\, and shared spiritual growth\, making it a welcoming place for all. \nThe Power of Collective Prayer \nThe Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy exemplifies the power of collective prayer.
