SUMMARY:Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God 6:00 PM Divine Liturgy (Time was changed last minute)
DESCRIPTION:Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God🕀 Wednesday\, October 1\, 2025Feast of the Mother of God | Commemorations: Apostle Ananias (One of the Seventy)\, Venerable Roman Who Sang SweetlyA day of joyous protection—faithful are encouraged to attend Divine Liturgy and seek the Theotokos’ intercession. \n\n✥ Origins and Spiritual Meaning\nThis feast\, often known as the Intercession of the Theotokos\, began in Constantinople in the 10th century. The story tells of a vision of St. Andrew the Fool-for-Christ and his disciple Epiphanius\, who saw the Virgin Mary standing on the Church of Blachernae\, protecting the faithful beneath her veil. From that moment\, the Church has celebrated her loving protection over the world. \nThe feast beautifully combines Mary’s maternal care with a call to live in prayerful vigilance\, placing our trust under her mantle of grace. \n\n✥ Liturgical Heartbeat: Troparion & Kontakion\n🕊 Troparion (Tone 4)\n\n“Today we believers radiantly celebrate\, flooded in light by your coming to us\, O Mother of God; beholding your pure image\, we say with contrition: shelter us with your precious protection and deliver us from every evil\, entreating Your Son\, Christ our God\, to save our souls.” \n\nThis hymn captures the radiant joy of Mary’s protective presence and our plea for her continued care. \n🕊 Kontakion (Tone 3)\n\n“Today the Virgin stands before us in the church and together with the choirs of saints invisibly prays to God for us. Angels are worshipping with hierarchs\, Apostles exult with prophets\, for the Mother of God prays in our behalf to the eternal God.” \n\nWe envision Mary’s presence above us in church\, interceding on our behalf\, uniting the heavenly and earthly Church. \n\n✥ Scriptural Themes in Worship\n\n\nProkeimenon (Luke 1:46-48): “My soul magnifies the Lord…” celebrates Mary’s humility and joyful acceptance. \n\n\nEpistle (Hebrews 9:1–7): Reflects the protection of the Old Covenant’s tabernacle—prefiguring Mary as the living tabernacle who shelters Christ within. \n\n\nGospel (Luke 10:38–42; 11:27–28): Underlines Mary’s true greatness in hearing and obeying the Word of God—her obedience makes her the perfect intercessor. \n\n\n\n✥ Traditions and Popular Piety\n1. 🕊 Divine Liturgy & Veneration\n\n\nAttend Liturgy\, receiving blessings and protection through participating in Eucharist. Many parishes display an icon of the feast prominently for veneration. \n\n\nPrayers include petitions for peace\, healing\, and safety\, especially under Mary’s protective veil. \n\n\n2. 🛡️ Icon of the Protection\nThe famous icon depicts the Theotokos holding her orarial (veil) over the faithful. It’s common in homes and churches—people may kiss or touch it\, seeking comfort and blessing. \n3. 🤲 Blessing of Icons and Homes\nIn some parishes\, priests bless icons of the Protection and distribute small prayer cards or medals. The faithful often invite clergy to bless their homes with these sacred images and ask Mary to shelter their families. \n\n✥ Other Commemorations\nSt. Ananias\, Apostle and One of the Seventy\nOne of the Seventy sent by Christ\, his work in healing and preaching continued the mission. His memory encourages us to follow Christ’s command to “heal the sick” and share the Gospel. \nVenerable Roman Who Sang Sweetly\nA monk known for his beautiful liturgical singing. His life testifies to the power of prayerful worship\, reminding us that hymns lift our souls to heavenly praise. \n\n✥ For the Younger Generation: Why It’s Awesome\n\n\n\n\n\nElement\nWhy It’s Cool for Kids & Teens\n\n\n\n\nProtective Theme\nThink of it like having a superhero shield—Mary’s veil covers and guards us.\n\n\nIconography\nThe icon is like a comic book picture of heavenly protection—vivid and powerful.\n\n\nMusic & Psalms\nSilken chants and prayers—remember Psalm 91? “He shall cover you with His feathers…”\n\n\nHeroes of Faith\nLearn about St. Ananias (the early Apostle!) and Brother Roman (singing his heart out in church).\n\n\nFamily Tradition\nMany will bless their home and icons and place them in a special corner devoted to prayer and protection.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n✥ Fun Ideas for Families & Youth\n\n\nDraw and color your own Protection icon\, then pray before it asking Mary’s blessing. \n\n\nCreate a “protection corner” at home: icon\, candle\, prayer card. \n\n\nTry learning “Lord\, I call upon You…” (Psalm 141)\, sung during the feast. \n\n\nShare stories of times you felt “protected” — by faith\, prayer\, or a loved one. \n\n\n\n✥ Summary: A Feast of Light and Security\nThe Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God reminds us that we are never alone. Like ancient Christians under Mary’s veil\, we too are sheltered and loved. And just as St. Ananias spread healing and Roman lifted voices in praise\, we too are called to live under Mary’s mantle—with courage\, joy\, and song. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere are historical facts and traditions surrounding the Feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God (Pokrova)\, with a focus on Ukrainian tradition—why it has held such a special place in Ukrainian spiritual and national life: \n\n✝️ Historical Origins: From Constantinople to Ukraine\n\n\nThe feast commemorates a vision in Constantinople (9th–10th century)\, when St. Andrew the Fool-for-Christ and his disciple Epiphanius saw the Theotokos appear over the congregation in the Church of Blachernae. She knelt in prayer\, then spread her veil (pokrov) over the people as a sign of divine protection\, and the city was saved from invasion. Wikipedia+15chicagougcc.org+15ukrainianinstitute.org+15 \n\n\nThe feast’s name—Pokrov\, meaning veil or protection—derives directly from that miraculous act. chicagougcc.org+1Aleteia+1 \n\n\nIt was originally a local Byzantine feast\, celebrated on October 1 (Julian calendar). After Constantinople fell in 1453\, its celebration declined among Greek Christians. But in Kyivan Rus’–Ukraine\, it remained beloved and flourished. chicagougcc.org+1stannesorthodox.ca+1 \n\n\n\n🛡️ Ukrainian Embrace: Faith\, Culture and Defense\n\n\nFrom the 11th century\, Ukrainian rulers deeply identified with the Theotokos as protector: \n\n\nPrince Yaroslav the Wise placed Rus’ under Mary’s patronage (1036–37)\, built St. Sophia Cathedral and the Church of Annunciation above Kyiv’s Golden Gates in thanksgiving. chicagougcc.org+15chicagougcc.org+15ukrainianchurchesofcanada.ca+15 \n\n\nPrince Volodymyr Monomakh credited his military victories to her intercession. He even minted prayer seals invoking her protection. chicagougcc.org+1stannesorthodox.ca+1 \n\n\nPrince Mstyslav vowed to build a church to her if victorious in battle—true to his word. chicagougcc.org+1stannesorthodox.ca+1 \n\n\n\n\nDuring the Cossack era\, devotion to Pokrova became deeply embedded in military and national life: \n\n\nZaporizhian Cossacks built a church at Sich dedicated to Protection. Their battle hymns invoked Her: “Under your patronage we fly… deliver us from our miseries.” stnicholasucp.ca+15chicagougcc.org+15Релігійно-інформаційна служба України+15 \n\n\nUkrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) declared the feast Pokrova (October 14) their official spiritual patronal day in 1947. Aleteia+5Wikipedia+5ukrainianinstitute.org+5 \n\n\n\n\n\n🕊️ National and Cultural Significance\n\n\nIn modern Ukraine\, October 1\, (October 14 – Julian Calendar) became: \n\n\nA religious celebration. \n\n\nA day of Ukrainian Cossacks\, commemorating historic defenders of the nation. \n\n\nDefenders of Ukraine Day (since 2014)\, a public holiday honoring current military servicemen and women. Wikipedia \n\n\n\n\nThe day continues to unify spiritual devotion\, historical memory\, and national identity. Many see the Theotokos as Patroness of the Ukrainian armed forces. \n\n\n\n🖼️ Liturgical and Iconographic Traditions\n\n\nIconography of Pokrova is distinctive: \n\n\nThe Theotokos is shown in full-length Oranta posture\, arms raised in prayer\, holding her veil stretched over the faithful. \n\n\nBelow her may stand St. Roman the Melodist\, often depicted writing kontakia. This connects the observance (October 1) with his commemoration. stnicholasucp.ca+1Aleteia+1Wikipedia+1chicagougcc.org+1 \n\n\n\n\nUkrainian tradition values her image especially as Queen and Protectress\, and her icons are commonly found in homes\, churches\, and Cossack banners. chicagougcc.org \n\n\nThe famous Virgin Orans mosaic in Saint Sophia Cathedral (Kyiv) symbolizes Mary as a protective wall over the city (“Indestructible Wall”)\, connecting back to Yaroslav’s vow. Релігійно-інформаційна служба України+2Wikipedia+2panorthodoxsynod.blogspot.com+2 \n\n\n\n🎉 Folk Customs & Social Traditions\n\n\nOctober marks the end of the agricultural year. Ukrainians traditionally: \n\n\nThanked the Theotokos for the harvest. \n\n\nBegan a season of fall celebrations\, including weddings. \n\n\nBrides-to-be prayed: “Saint Pokrova\, cover my head”\, symbolizing protection and blessing. Релігійно-інформаційна служба України+12ukrainianinstitute.org+12Wikipedia+12Edmonton Eparchy+1Reddit+1 \n\n\n\n\nFamily prayers and home icons are decorated especially on this day\, and many parishes hold special liturgies\, blessing banners or holdings tied to military symbolism. \n\n\n\n📋 Summary Table: Why Pokrova Matters in Ukrainian Tradition\n\n\n\n\n\nTheme\nSignificance in Ukrainian Context\n\n\n\n\nFaith & Intercession\nMary as divine protector and intercessor from ancient times.\n\n\nState & Military\nChosen patroness by princes (Yaroslav\, Monomakh)\, Cossacks\, and modern military.\n\n\nNational Identity\nTied to Cossack heritage and modern “Defenders of Ukraine Day.”\n\n\nArt & Symbolism\nIconography unique to Ukrainian style; mosaic icons like Oranta.\n\n\nFolk Practice\nHome prayer\, weddings in autumn\, rural customs shaped around feast.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n✅ In Conclusion\nThe Feast of the Protection (Pokrova) has deep roots in Byzantine miracle and liturgical worship. But in Ukraine\, it became something more—a symbol of national identity\, divine defense\, and cultural continuity. From medieval princes and Cossack warriors to modern-day soldiers and families\, the faithful have sought Mary’s veil of protection down through the centuries.

SUMMARY:Miraculous Icon of Our Lady of Hoshiv - A Unique Opportunity to Venerate the Icon
DESCRIPTION:Hoshiv’s Miraculous Icon: A Sacred Treasure in Alberta – Edmonton Eparchy \nHoshiv’s Miraculous Icon – A Sacred Treasure of Faith\nThe miraculous Icon of the Mother of God of Hoshiv is one of the most revered images in Eastern Catholic tradition\, known for its powerful intercession and miraculous history. For centuries\, the faithful have sought comfort and healing through the prayers of the Blessed Mother before this icon. \nA History of Miracles and Divine Protection\nThe story of the Hoshiv Icon begins in 1704-1705 when nobleman Andriy Shugai acquired two copies of the famous Icon of the Mother of God of Czestochowa in Poland. One of these copies remained in his family and soon became known for miraculous events. \nAmong the first recorded miracles:A fire broke out in Shugai’s home\, destroying everything—except the icon and the wall it hung upon. The icon wept tears\, witnessed by nobleman Mykola Markovych Hoshovsky\, its later guardian. \nThese extraordinary signs led Bishop Atanasy Sheptytsky of Lviv to declare the icon miraculous and transfer it to Hoshiv Monastery in Ukraine in 1737. The monastery soon became a major pilgrimage site\, with official records listing over 117 miracles attributed to the intercession of the Mother of God of Hoshiv. \nFrom Persecution to Preservation – The Icon’s Journey to Canada\nDuring the Soviet persecution of the Ukrainian Catholic Church\, the icon was confiscated in 1950\, its whereabouts unknown. By divine providence\, it resurfaced in 1950s New York\, where Fr. Nikon Svirsky\, OSBM\, a Basilian priest from Canada\, recognized it. With great care\, he secured its return\, bringing it to safety in Canada. Since then\, the icon has been preserved at Saints Peter and Paul Monastery in Mundare\, Alberta. \nA Unique Opportunity to Venerate the Icon\nThis year\, the faithful in Alberta will have a special opportunity to venerate the Hoshiv Icon as it travels to various parishes\, allowing more people to pray before it and experience its sacred presence. Stay tuned for updates on where and when you can visit this miraculous icon.

SUMMARY:Rosary Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for the Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy\nAs we gather in faith\, we invite you to participate in our Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy\, a special opportunity to prepare our hearts and minds for worship. This sacred time of prayer is open to all\, providing a space for reflection\, devotion\, and community connection. \nA Sacred Tradition \nThe rosary is a powerful form of prayer that has been cherished in the Catholic tradition for centuries. By praying the rosary\, we meditate on the life of Jesus Christ and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This beautiful devotion helps us deepen our relationship with God\, fostering a sense of peace and spiritual clarity. In our parish\, we honour this tradition by offering a communal rosary prayer before each Divine Liturgy. \nPreparing for Worship \nThe Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy serves as an essential preparation for the liturgical celebration that follows. As we come together to pray\, we create an atmosphere of reverence and unity within our community. Each bead of the rosary represents a moment of contemplation\, allowing us to reflect on the mysteries of faith and the love of God. \nThis time of prayer is not only a personal journey but also a collective experience that strengthens our bonds as a parish community. We encourage everyone to participate\, whether you are a long-time member of our parish or a newcomer seeking a deeper understanding of our faith. \nPraying for Peace and Guidance \nDuring the rosary\, we lift our intentions to God\, praying for our families\, our communities\, and those in need of comfort and healing. In particular\, we focus our prayers on peace in our world\, seeking divine intervention in times of conflict and unrest. As we pray\, we remember those suffering from the challenges in Ukraine and around the globe\, placing our trust in God’s grace and mercy. \nThe act of praying the rosary invites us to pause and reflect on the blessings in our lives while acknowledging the struggles we face. Together\, we ask for strength and guidance\, fostering a spirit of hope that transcends our individual experiences. \nA Welcoming Community \nWe invite all members of our parish and newcomers alike to join us for the Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy. This gathering is open to everyone\, regardless of your familiarity with the rosary or your level of faith. Our community is built on love\, support\, and shared spiritual growth\, making it a welcoming place for all. \nThe Power of Collective Prayer \nThe Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy exemplifies the power of collective prayer. When we come together to pray\, we create a ripple effect of positive energy that can bring about transformation in our lives and the lives of those around us. Each prayer offered is a testament to our faith and commitment to supporting one another on our spiritual journeys. \nJoin Us for This Special Occasion \nWe warmly welcome you to participate in this special occasion of faith and community. As we gather for the Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy\, let us open our hearts to the grace of God and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Your presence enriches our community and strengthens our collective prayers. \nTogether\, let us embark on this sacred journey\, seeking peace\, guidance\, and unity through our devotion.

Together\, we ask for strength and guidance\, fostering a spirit of hope that transcends our individual experiences. \nA Welcoming Community \nWe invite all members of our parish and newcomers alike to join us for the Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy.
