This sacred time of prayer is open to all\, providing a space for reflection\, devotion\, and community connection. \nA Sacred Tradition \nThe rosary is a powerful form of prayer that has been cherished in the Catholic tradition for centuries. By praying the rosary\, we meditate on the life of Jesus Christ and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This beautiful devotion helps us deepen our relationship with God\, fostering a sense of peace and spiritual clarity. In our parish\, we honour this tradition by offering a communal rosary prayer before each Divine Liturgy. \nPreparing for Worship \nThe Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy serves as an essential preparation for the liturgical celebration that follows. As we come together to pray\, we create an atmosphere of reverence and unity within our community. We encourage everyone to participate\, whether you are a long-time member of our parish or a newcomer seeking a deeper understanding of our faith. \nPraying for Peace and Guidance \nDuring the rosary\, we lift our intentions to God\, praying for our families\, our communities\, and those in need of comfort and healing. In particular\, we focus our prayers on peace in our world\, seeking divine intervention in times of conflict and unrest. As we pray\, we remember those suffering from the challenges in Ukraine and around the globe\, placing our trust in God’s grace and mercy. \nThe act of praying the rosary invites us to pause and reflect on the blessings in our lives while acknowledging the struggles we face. Together\, we ask for strength and guidance\, fostering a spirit of hope that transcends our individual experiences. \nA Welcoming Community \nWe invite all members of our parish and newcomers alike to join us for the Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy. This gathering is open to everyone\, regardless of your familiarity with the rosary or your level of faith. SUMMARY:Feast Day of the Synaxis of the Archangel Michael - Divine Liturgy @ 9AM
DESCRIPTION:The Synaxis of the Archangel Michael and the Other Bodiless Powers\nFeast Day: November 8\n\nA Heavenly Assembly\nThe Synaxis of the Archangel Michael and the Other Bodiless Powers is celebrated on November 8 in the Byzantine Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches. The word synaxis means “assembly” — a gathering of the faithful to honor Saint Michael the Archangel and all the heavenly hosts who serve God in His divine plan of salvation. \n\nOrigins of the Feast\nThe feast grew out of the ancient Eastern liturgical tradition\, connected to the dedication of early churches to Saint Michael\, such as the Michaelion near Constantinople and the basilica on the Salarian Way near Rome. \nWhile the “Eighth Day” of the month beautifully symbolizes eternity and the fullness of creation in Christ\, the feast’s true historical roots lie in these early dedications and the Byzantine calendar. \n\n🕊️ The Council of Laodicea (4th century) did not institute this feast. Its canon warned against a kind of “covert idolatry” involving angels. The Church’s proper veneration of the angels developed later in a sound\, liturgical context. \n\n\nVeneration\, Not Worship\nThe Church teaches that worship (latria) belongs to God alone\, while veneration (hyperdulia) is the special honor given to the saints and angels. \nThe Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy affirms that the Church “venerates the angels who help her on her earthly pilgrimage.”The Catechism of the Council of Trent likewise teaches that this veneration is not contrary to the First Commandment\, for all honor given to angels glorifies God\, their Creator. \n\n“The honor we pay the angelic creatures redounds to Your own surpassing glory.”— Roman Missal\, Feast of the Archangels \n\n\nScripture and Tradition\nSacred Scripture presents the angels as messengers and protectors: \n\n“Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to serve\, for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation?”— Hebrews 1:14 \n\nThe Second Council of Nicaea (787) explicitly approved the veneration of “the honourable Angels” along with Christ\, the Mother of God\, and the saints.Thus\, in the liturgy\, the Church joins the angels in praising the Lord\, while they unite their praise with ours before the heavenly throne. \n\nThe Heavenly Powers\nThe Pseudo-Dionysian tradition speaks of nine choirs of angels — Seraphim\, Cherubim\, Thrones\, Dominions\, Virtues\, Powers\, Principalities\, Archangels\, and Angels. This hierarchy is not a ranking of worship but a theological meditation on God’s creative order. \nThe angels are spiritual (non-corporeal) beings — personal\, intelligent\, and entirely devoted to the will of God.They are not “ghosts\,” but radiant spirits of love and obedience. \n\nA Feast of Unity and Thanksgiving\nOn this day\, heaven and earth unite in one hymn of praise.Saint Michael — whose name means “Who is like God?” — leads the angelic hosts in defending the Church and guiding the faithful toward the Kingdom. \nThe feast reminds us that the visible and invisible worlds are united in one worship of the Holy Trinity\, and that every believer is accompanied by the protection of the heavenly powers. \n\nPoints of Divergence – Feast of St. Michael (and the Bodiless Powers)\n1. Date of Celebration\n\n\nOrthodox (Byzantine) – Celebrated on 8 November \n\n\nLatin-rite Catholic – Principal feast of Michaelmas on 29 September\, honoring Michael\, Gabriel\, and Raphael. \n\n\nEastern-Catholic (UGCC) – Observed on 8 November . \n\n\n\n🗓️ Old-Calendar Orthodox: 21 Nov civilly | Eastern-Catholic: 8 Nov civillyThe difference can cause confusion in shared events\, so calendars should be specified clearly. \n\n\n2. Liturgical Focus and Titles\n\n\nByzantine Title: Synaxis of the Archangel Michael and All the Bodiless Powers — emphasizes the whole angelic host gathered in divine worship. \n\n\nLatin Title: Feast of the Archangels or Michaelmas — emphasizes Michael’s personal mission as protector and defender. \n\n\n\nThe Byzantine title stresses the communal unity of heaven’s choirs;the Latin title highlights Michael’s guardianship and intercession. \n\n\n3. Relationship to Other Angelic Feasts\n\n\nEastern Tradition: Celebrates a theological progression —29 Sept (Archangels) → 2 Oct (Guardian Angels) → 8 Nov (Synaxis of all). \n\n\nLatin Tradition: Celebrates 29 Sept (Archangels) and 2 Oct (Guardian Angels)\, with no distinct 8 November synaxis. \n\n\n\nUnderstanding these rhythms prevents confusion or overlap in shared devotion. \n\n\n4. Historical Origins\n\n\nEastern Tradition: Traces the 8 November date to dedications of churches to St Michael — especially near Constantinople and on the Salarian Way in Rome. \n\n\nWestern Tradition: Connects 29 September to the Apparition of St Michael on Mount Gargano and to medieval Michaelmas customs. \n\n\n\nBoth traditions are ancient and legitimate\, each rooted in its own local devotion. \n\n\n5. Calendar Usage\n\n\nOld-Calendar Orthodox: 8 November Gregorian= 21 November Julian \n\n\nNew-Calendar Orthodox and all Eastern-Catholics: 8 November Gregorian. \n\n\n\nAlways note which calendar is used to avoid scheduling errors. \n\n\n6. Theological Emphasis\n\n\nEastern Texts: Emphasize Michael as Archistrategos (chief commander) of the heavenly hosts and the cosmic unity of the angelic worship. \n\n\nWestern Texts: Emphasize Michael as protector of the Church and guardian of the faithful\, especially in the Guardian Angel devotion. \n\n\n\nEach expresses a unique but complementary vision of the angelic ministry in salvation history. \n\n\nFor Ecumenical and Catechetical Clarity\nWhen teaching or publishing about the Feast of St Michael: \n\n\n✅ Clearly state the calendar (Julian vs. Gregorian). \n\n\n✅ Respect the different titles (Synaxis vs. Feast of the Archangels). \n\n\n✅ Acknowledge each tradition’s sequence of feasts and local history. \n\n\n✅ Use the proper term veneration (hyperdulia)\, not worship\, for the angels. \n\n\nBy doing so\, we affirm the shared faith in God’s angelic messengers while honoring the liturgical richness of East and West. \n\nA Devotional Prayer\n\nO Holy Archangel Michael\,Defender of the Church and protector of souls\,guard us against every evil\, guide our steps in truth\,and help us to join the angels and saintsin the eternal praise of God.Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SUMMARY:Saint Josaphat Kuncevyc - service at Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:Saint Josaphat Kuncevyc (c. 1580–1623)\nMemorial – November 12Martyr for the Unity of the Church – Pray for us. \n\nA Shepherd for Unity\nSaint Josaphat Kuncevyc was born around 1580 in Volodymyr\, in present-day Ukraine. From his youth he longed to serve God and bring peace to a divided Church. He entered the Basilian Order (according to tradition at age 24) and was ordained a priest in 1609. In 1617 he became Archbishop of Polotsk\, a vast diocese torn by misunderstanding between Catholics and Orthodox. With gentleness and courage\, he rebuilt parishes\, encouraged the clergy\, and worked tirelessly for the unity of Christians. \n\nFaithful Until Death\nWhile visiting the city of Vitebsk\, Josaphat was attacked by an angry crowd opposed to Church union. Before dying\, he prayed for his attackers\, forgiving them completely. His body\, later found incorrupt\, became a sign of God’s grace and the beginning of many reported miracles. \n\nHonoured by the Church\nThe cause for his canonization began only five years after his death. He was beatified in 1643 and canonized in 1867 by Pope Pius IX.During the Second Vatican Council\, his relics were transferred to Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome\, where they rest today at the high altar—a beautiful reminder that his life’s mission for Christian unity continues in the heart of the universal Church. \n\nLiturgical Celebration\n\n\nFeast (Memorial): November 12 – Universal Calendar (Roman Missal) \n\n\nOld-Calendar Churches: First Sunday after November 12 (Julian Calendar) \n\n\nReadings: \n\n\nHebrews 2:2-10 – “The salvation first announced by the Lord was confirmed to us by those who heard him.” \n\n\nLuke 10:16-21 – “The seventy-two returned with joy\, saying\, ‘Lord\, even the demons submit to us in your name.’” \n\n\nHymns:The Byzantine Church honours Saint Josaphat with the Troparion and Kontakion of Tone 4\, found in the official Typikon. SUMMARY:St Philip’s Fast (Nativity Fast)
DESCRIPTION:St Philip’s Fast (Nativity Fast)\nThe St Philip’s Fast\, also called the Nativity Fast or Pilipivka in the Ukrainian Greek‑Catholic tradition\, is a forty-day period of preparation leading up to the Nativity of our Lord. It begins on 15 November\, the day after the Feast of St Philip the Apostle\, and ends on 24 December\, the Eve of the Nativity. In the Eastern Churches\, this season is a time of strict fasting (abstinence from meat\, dairy\, and often fish)\, prayer\, almsgiving\, and spiritual conversion. \nIn the Latin (Western) tradition\, the counterpart season is called Advent. While Advent also calls the faithful to conversion\, hope\, and spiritual preparation\, the discipline of fasting is generally less strict—observed as abstinence on Fridays or other penitential practices encouraged by the episcopal conference. \n\nLiturgical Rank:St Philip’s Fast is a penitential season of the Eastern liturgical year\, culminating in the Nativity of the Lord. It is comparable to the Great Fast (Lent) in its spiritual focus\, though shorter in duration. \n\n\nCalendar Notes\n\n\nGregorian Calendar (Eastern‑Catholic): 15 Nov – 24 Dec \n\n\nJulian Calendar (Old‑Calendar Orthodox): 15 Nov – 24 Dec (Julian)\, corresponding to 21 Nov – 30 Dec in the civil (Gregorian) calendar \n\n\nDifferent churches celebrate the season on different civil dates; this diversity should be respected in ecumenical or mixed-community settings. \n\nWeekly Commemorations\nDuring the Fast\, Eastern Churches commemorate key feasts and figures that prepare us to receive Christ. Families are encouraged to pray\, reflect\, and engage in acts of service while following the canonical fasting discipline. \n\n\nFeast of St Philip (15 Nov) – The first witness of Christ’s call. \n\n\nScripture Reading: John 1:43‑50 (Jesus calls Philip and Nathanael) \n\n\nReflection: Who introduced you to Jesus? How can you share your faith with others? \n\n\nDevotional Option: The Jesus Prayer (Lord Jesus Christ\, Son of God\, have mercy on me\, a sinner)\, traditionally used in Eastern piety\, may be incorporated\, but is optional. \n\n\n\n\nPresentation of the Theotokos (21 Nov) – Mary dedicated to God in the Temple. \n\n\nReflection: How do we dedicate our hearts to God? What charitable acts can our family do to serve others? \n\n\nPrayer: Rejoice\, Mother of God\, full of grace… \n\n\nTroparion: Use official troparion of the Byzantine liturgical books (Typikon). Local devotional songs may be included as optional. \n\n\n\n\nFeast of St Andrew the First-Called (30 Nov) – St Andrew brings the light of Christ to the nations. \n\n\nReflection: Are we witnesses of Christ in our daily lives? How can we bring hope and love to others? \n\n\nTroparion: Use official Typikon text. \n\n\n\n\nFeast of St Nicholas the Wonderworker (6 Dec) – An example of loving acts and secret charity. \n\n\nReflection: How can we help others selflessly? How can our family imitate St Nicholas? \n\n\nDevotional song (optional): O Khto Khto (Ukrainian folk hymn) \n\n\n\n\nSunday of the Holy Ancestors (Sunday before Nativity) – Courage and faithful hope of God’s people. \n\n\nReflection: How can we live our faith courageously? \n\n\nScripture (devotional suggestion): Daniel 6:11‑24 or lectionary passages per year. \n\n\nTroparion: Use official Typikon text. \n\n\n\n\nFinal Sunday of the Fast – Preparation for the Nativity\, focusing on the Incarnation. \n\n\nScripture: Isaiah 9:2‑7 or other liturgical readings. \n\n\nReflection: How do we prepare our hearts to receive Christ? How can our family bring the light of Christ into the world? \n\n\nTroparion: Official Typikon text for the Sunday before Nativity. \n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Any local devotional practices\, songs\, or prayers should be clearly distinguished from the official liturgical texts. \n\n\nFasting Rules\n\n\nEastern Churches: Abstinence from meat\, dairy\, and eggs (xerophagy) is the canonical norm. \n\n\nWestern (Latin) Rite: Optional penitential practices; abstinence on Fridays or acts of charity as determined by local episcopal conference. \n\n\nFamilies: Fasting is a tool for spiritual growth\, prayer\, and service—not punishment. \n\n\n\nTheology of the Fast\nThe Nativity Fast emphasizes the twofold character of Advent: \n\n\nPreparation for the Incarnation: We ready our hearts for Christ’s birth. \n\n\nAnticipation of the Second Coming (Parousia): We live with hope and readiness for Christ’s return. \n\n\nThe dogmatic content is the same in East and West; the difference lies in liturgical expression\, fasting discipline\, and devotional customs. \n\nEcumenical Sensitivity\n\n\nDifferent churches may celebrate on different civil dates due to the Julian/Gregorian calendar difference. \n\n\nEastern and Western fasting practices differ in discipline. \n\n\nPopular devotions (e.g.\, the Jesus Prayer) are optional and should harmonize with liturgy. \n\n\nMutual respect ensures that all faithful can prepare spiritually for Christ while honoring their own traditions. \n\nConcluding Thought\nThe St Philip’s Fast (Nativity Fast) is a rich spiritual season inviting the faithful to conversion\, prayer\, charity\, and hope. By observing the liturgical norms\, following the canonical fasting rules\, and engaging in family-oriented reflection and acts of service\, we prepare our hearts to welcome Christ\, the Light of the World.

SUMMARY:Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple - Divine Liturgy 7:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:November 21 – The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary / Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple\nOn 21 November\, the Church celebrates a feast that highlights the holiness and dedication of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the Latin-rite Catholic tradition\, it is called the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary\, observed as a memorial\, while in the Byzantine tradition\, it is known as the Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple. Both traditions honor the same profound mystery: Mary’s consecration to God from her earliest years\, preparing her to become the Mother of the Incarnate Word. \nAccording to the ancient tradition recorded in the Proto‑Evangelium of James\, Mary’s parents\, Joachim and Anne\, brought their three-year-old daughter to the Temple in Jerusalem. There\, the priest of the Temple received her and welcomed her into the sacred space where God’s presence dwelled. While the priest’s name is not preserved in the liturgical texts\, this moment symbolizes Mary’s total dedication and her growth in purity and holiness within God’s house. Some devotional accounts imagine angels rejoicing at her entrance\, a beautiful poetic image\, even if it is not part of the official liturgy. \nThe Byzantine hymnography beautifully captures this event. The Troparion (Tone 4) proclaims: \n\n“Today the holy Mother of God entered the holy Temple\,the holy place where the Almighty God dwells;she is the most pure\, ever‑virgin\, the Mother of the Light of the world.” \n\nMary is honored in Catholic theology as the new Ark of the Covenant\, the pure vessel through which the Incarnate Word entered the world. This imagery does not suggest that she is the source of salvation herself\, but that she points the faithful to Christ\, the sole Savior\, and models a life of obedience\, faith\, and intercessory prayer. The Church invites all believers to imitate her dedication\, offering their hearts and lives to God with humility and devotion. \nLiturgical celebrations vary according to rite. In the Roman-rite\, the feast is observed with a memorial Mass\, including prayers proper to the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the Byzantine Church\, the feast is celebrated with Matins\, Vespers\, and the Divine Liturgy\, often accompanied by processions of children carrying lamps\, reflecting the symbolic Light of Christ. Such customs\, recognized by the Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy\, foster the faithful’s spiritual participation and connection to the sacred story. \nThe feast also serves as a reminder that God often calls His servants to holiness from a young age\, and that lives lived in faithful service can bear fruit for generations. Mary’s presentation in the Temple prefigures her unique role in salvation history as the Mother of God and highlights the spiritual ideal of consecration and readiness to respond to God’s will. Through her example\, Christians are encouraged to dedicate themselves to prayer\, virtuous living\, and selfless service\, always turning to Christ as the source of grace and salvation. \n\nFun Facts & Curiosities\n\n\nMary was very young! According to tradition\, she was just three years old when presented in the Temple. Imagine a toddler walking into the sacred Temple—already called to holiness! \n\n\nThe Ark connection: Mary is sometimes called the “living Ark of the Covenant” because she carried God’s Word\, Jesus\, in her womb many years later. Just like the Ark held the tablets of the Law\, Mary bore the Living Word. \n\n\nLamps and light: In some Eastern Christian communities\, children carry small lamps or candles in processions. This symbolizes Christ\, the Light of the world\, coming into the spiritual “Temple” of our hearts. \n\n\nIconography: Many icons of this feast show Mary climbing the Temple steps\, sometimes assisted by two women\, while priests stand to receive her—symbolizing her journey toward God. \n\n\nGlobal celebration: While the feast is widely celebrated in Eastern Europe\, it is also recognized in the West\, showing the universal devotion to Mary’s holy life. \n\n\nA feast of preparation: Just as Advent prepares us for Christ’s birth\, the Presentation of Mary reminds us that preparation and dedication are key in our spiritual lives.

It is a paraliturgical service of intercession and thanksgiving\, not a substitute for the Divine Liturgy\, designed to help the faithful prepare spiritually for Christ’s birth. \nThe service typically includes: \n\n\nCanon: Nine-ode hymns based on biblical canticles. \n\n\nPsalmody and supplications. \n\n\nBrief Gospel passages (optional). \n\n\nA popular variant\, the Emmanuel Moleben\, emphasizes “God with us” and the fulfillment of prophecy. \nThe Nativity Moleben nurtures devotion\, focuses hearts on the Incarnation\, and complements the Nativity Fast\, reflecting the shared Byzantine heritage of the UGCC and Orthodox Churches. \n

SUMMARY:Rosary Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for the Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy\nAs we gather in faith\, we invite you to participate in our Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy\, a special opportunity to prepare our hearts and minds for worship. Each bead of the rosary represents a moment of contemplation\, allowing us to reflect on the mysteries of faith and the love of God. \nThis time of prayer is not only a personal journey but also a collective experience that strengthens our bonds as a parish community. Our community is built on love\, support\, and shared spiritual growth\, making it a welcoming place for all. \nThe Power of Collective Prayer \nThe Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy exemplifies the power of collective prayer. When we come together to pray\, we create a ripple effect of positive energy that can bring about transformation in our lives and the lives of those around us. Each prayer offered is a testament to our faith and commitment to supporting one another on our spiritual journeys. \nJoin Us for This Special Occasion \nWe warmly welcome you to participate in this special occasion of faith and community.
