This sacred time of prayer is open to all\, providing a space for reflection\, devotion\, and community connection. \nA Sacred Tradition \nThe rosary is a powerful form of prayer that has been cherished in the Catholic tradition for centuries. By praying the rosary\, we meditate on the life of Jesus Christ and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This beautiful devotion helps us deepen our relationship with God\, fostering a sense of peace and spiritual clarity. In our parish\, we honour this tradition by offering a communal rosary prayer before each Divine Liturgy. \nPreparing for Worship \nThe Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy serves as an essential preparation for the liturgical celebration that follows. As we come together to pray\, we create an atmosphere of reverence and unity within our community. Each bead of the rosary represents a moment of contemplation\, allowing us to reflect on the mysteries of faith and the love of God. \nThis time of prayer is not only a personal journey but also a collective experience that strengthens our bonds as a parish community. We encourage everyone to participate\, whether you are a long-time member of our parish or a newcomer seeking a deeper understanding of our faith. \nPraying for Peace and Guidance \nDuring the rosary\, we lift our intentions to God\, praying for our families\, our communities\, and those in need of comfort and healing. In particular\, we focus our prayers on peace in our world\, seeking divine intervention in times of conflict and unrest. As we pray\, we remember those suffering from the challenges in Ukraine and around the globe\, placing our trust in God’s grace and mercy. \nThe act of praying the rosary invites us to pause and reflect on the blessings in our lives while acknowledging the struggles we face. Together\, we ask for strength and guidance\, fostering a spirit of hope that transcends our individual experiences. \nA Welcoming Community \nWe invite all members of our parish and newcomers alike to join us for the Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy. This gathering is open to everyone\, regardless of your familiarity with the rosary or your level of faith. Our community is built on love\, support\, and shared spiritual growth\, making it a welcoming place for all. \nThe Power of Collective Prayer \nThe Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy exemplifies the power of collective prayer. When we come together to pray\, we create a ripple effect of positive energy that can bring about transformation in our lives and the lives of those around us. Each prayer offered is a testament to our faith and commitment to supporting one another on our spiritual journeys. \nJoin Us for This Special Occasion \nWe warmly welcome you to participate in this special occasion of faith and community. SUMMARY:The Conception of St. Anna
DESCRIPTION:December 9 (Dec. 22) – The Conception of St. Anna\nA Feast of Joy\, Promise\, and the Dawn of Salvation\nOn December 9 (December 22 on the Julian calendar)\, the Church celebrates a radiant feast filled with hope and quiet glory: the Conception of the Mother of God by St. Anna. This day marks the hidden beginning of our salvation—the moment when God answered the fervent prayers of the righteous Joachim and Anna and prepared a dwelling place for His Only-Begotten Son. Because of the feast’s solemnity\, the faithful are strongly encouraged to participate in the Divine Liturgy\, and on the eve to attend the All-Night Vigil with Great Vespers and Matins. \n\n“Today the chains of barrenness are shattered…”\nSo proclaims the Troparion of the feast. Joachim and Anna had long carried the sorrow of childlessness\, enduring the pain and shame that accompanied it in their time. The hymnography places their longing on our lips: \n“Anna\, whose name means divine grace\, once cried out in her prayer…Heal the pains of my heart. Make my fruitless womb fruitful.” \nGod’s answer came with overflowing mercy. As Vespers beautifully sings\, “The barren Anna leaped for joy\,” for she conceived Mary\, the Ever-Virgin\, who in turn would give birth to the Word of God. Through this miracle\, “the treasure house of grace begins to overflow\,” and the entire world rejoices. \nTheir joy reaches beyond their home; it touches all of salvation history. The prophets’ symbols begin to come alive: \n“the divine ladder is set up\,”“the holy mountain is planted in the womb\,”“the unburnable bush begins to bud forth\,”and “the mystical flower of Jesse blossoms.” \nMary’s conception is the quiet dawn before the rising of the Sun of Justice\, preparing the world for the Incarnation. \n\nTheological Meaning of the Feast\nThis feast teaches us that God works through patience\, humility\, and trust. Joachim and Anna’s long wait reveals God’s perfect timing. Their child—conceived naturally yet filled with divine grace from the first moment of her existence—is the one chosen to become the Mother of God\, the living temple more spacious than the heavens. \nIt is through Mary that Christ will take on human flesh\, fulfilling the Litiya’s proclamation: \n“It was fitting that the Queen of heaven and earth be conceived in holiness and preserved immaculate by God’s grace…Glory and praise to the Lord who willed it so\, the Creator of all things.” \nThe biblical readings proclaimed for the feast illuminate this mystery. The Epistle themes echo St. Paul’s teaching that we are children of the promise\, while the Gospel of Luke (1:39–49\, 56) calls us to hear the word of God and keep it—just as Mary would do perfectly. \n\nA Feast Rooted in Scripture and Tradition\nThe Vigil hymns describe Anna’s conception as the moment when divine grace begins to reverse humanity’s barrenness. We sing: \n“Rejoice with me\, all tribes of Israel\,for I have conceived and put aside my burden of childlessness.” \nAccording to ancient tradition\, Joachim and Anna had long endured sorrow\, but God transformed their grief into joy. They become the grandparents of Christ\, and their story echoes across the centuries as a sign of hope for all families. \n\nA Short History of the Celebration of the Feast\nThe feast of the Conception of St. Anna has deep and ancient roots. It originated in the Christian East around the 8th century\, where it was celebrated on December 9\, a date that remains traditional in many Eastern rites. \nThe feast appeared in the Western Church somewhat later\, first being celebrated in England in the 11th century. Over time its observance spread\, and by the 14th century it was incorporated into the universal liturgical calendar of the Roman Church. \nHistorically\, the feast in the West was celebrated with a vigil and an octave\, reflecting its importance. In several countries—including the United States\, Ireland\, and Scotland—the celebration became a holy day of obligation. \nThis shared history shows how East and West\, each in their own way\, treasured the mystery of Mary’s conception and the grace that began to dawn upon the world through St. Anna. \n\nCustoms and Traditions\nThough sometimes celebrated quietly\, this feast holds a special place in Eastern Christian devotion. Many communities observe: \nBlessing of Children and Expectant Mothers\nSince Joachim and Anna are powerful intercessors for married couples\, families longing for children\, and parents\, a special blessing is often offered near this feast. \nA Festive Meal in the Nativity Fast\nThe day carries a joyful character even within the fast\, and families often share a festive meal after Liturgy. \nHonoring Grandparents\nThis feast naturally invites us to pray for and honor our own grandparents\, living and departed. \n\nFun Facts & Family-Friendly Activities\nFun Facts\n\n\nSt. Anna’s name means “grace\,” fitting for someone through whom God pours out abundant blessings. \n\n\nAccording to tradition\, Joachim and Anna waited many years\, teaching us patience and trust in God’s plan. \n\n\nIcons of the feast often show their joyful embrace\, symbolizing love\, faith\, and divine blessing. \n\n\nActivities for Children\n\n\nJesse Tree or “Family of Jesus” CraftChildren can draw or place symbols of biblical ancestors leading to Mary. \n\n\n“Prayer of St. Anna” BookmarkWrite a simple prayer: “St. Anna\, teach me to pray and trust in God.” \n\n\nPaper Chain LessonBreak a paper chain to symbolize the Troparion’s message that “the chains of barrenness are shattered.”Discuss how God breaks chains of sadness\, fear\, or discouragement. \n\n\nCelebrate GrandparentsEncourage children to send drawings\, cards\, or blessings to grandparents. \n\n\n\nA Feast of Gentle Light\nThe Conception of St. Anna reminds us that God often begins His greatest works in quietness. In the stillness of Anna’s womb\, grace takes root; the Mother of God begins her earthly life; and the history of salvation moves toward fulfillment. The All-Night Vigil captures this mystery with tenderness: \n“Today the mystery announced from eternity appears in the arms of Anna…Mary\, the Maiden of God\, prepared to be the dwelling of the King of Ages.” \nThrough the prayers of St. Anna and St. Joachim\, may our families be strengthened\, our faith renewed\, and our hearts opened to the coming of Christ\, the Light of the world.

At our “Mothers in Prayer” gathering\, we will particularly focus our prayers on peace in Ukraine. As we pray the rosary for peace\, we remember the countless families affected by the war and place our trust in God’s grace. Together\, we ask for divine intervention\, seeking an end to violence and a restoration of harmony. \nThe Power of Prayer \nThe power of prayer cannot be underestimated. It is a source of hope that brings comfort during difficult times and a means of expressing our deepest desires and concerns. By coming together to pray\, we not only strengthen our connection with God but also create a ripple effect of positive energy that extends far beyond our gathering. Each prayer lifted can help bring peace\, healing\, and blessings to our loved ones and the wider community. \nJoin Us in This Sacred Mission \nWe warmly invite all mothers and women of faith to join us in this sacred mission. Whether you are praying for your own family\, and friends\, or the well-being of our global community\, your participation matters. Together\, we will lift our hearts and voices in prayer\, asking for God’s blessings\, peace\, and strength. \nCreating a Lasting Impact \nAs we come together in faith\, we hope to create a lasting impact not only within our parish but also in the world around us. Each prayer session serves as a reminder of the importance of community support and the strength that comes from united intentions. In this shared space\, we empower one another to take our faith beyond our gatherings and into our daily lives. \nLet Us Bring Peace and Grace to All \nLet the prayers of mothers bring peace and grace to all. In this gathering\, we seek to embody love and compassion\, extending our prayers beyond our immediate circles. SUMMARY:The Rite of Holy Confession - Сповідь
DESCRIPTION:Communal service of Repentence \nThe Rite of Holy Confession \nСповідь \n6 – 9 p.m. \nWhat is Confession in the Ukrainian Catholic Church? \n \n  \n\n\n\n\nWhat is sin?\n\n\n\n\nGod is always pouring forth His goodness upon all of creation. He created us to be like Himself in his image. Like God\, we are called to put our energy into everyone and everything around us. Sin is when we choose to misdirect our love either inwards or away from others. \nI think of it like a hose. Water is like the love of God\, and we are like hoses. A hose is meant to pour out water. But if a hose decided to cork itself up so that it would keep all the water for itself or keep the water from reaching those before it\, it would not be doing what it was created for. This “water holding” would just build up pressure within the hose. Eventually\, the pressure would cause the hose to spring a leak\, or even burst. At the very least\, the water would become stagnant. This self-centred holding back or turning away from God’s purpose for us is sin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy should we go to confession?\n\n\n\n\nWhen we were baptized\, God completely forgave all our sins. Because of this\, we have access to Communion with God and we are members of His Body\, the Church. When we turn away from God by committing a serious sin\, we break this union and damage our relationship with God. It must be restored before we can return to Communion. We need to go to confession to restore our relationship with God\, with the people who make up the Body of Christ\, and with ourselves. We also go to confession to strengthen us in our struggle against our tendencies toward sin that keep us from growing closer to God. Even though we were freed from sin through baptism\, we need God’s continuing help to grow in our faith and our relationship with God. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy do we confess to a priest?\n\n\n\n\nOur priest stands before us as the sign of the truth and grace of God. He has been given to us to help us. He hears our confession in Christ’s place and he forgives us in Christ’s name. He keeps the secret of our confession as God keeps it. When we go to our priest to confess\, we are going to God. We are confessing to God\, not the priest. The priest’s role is not that of a judge. He is a witness\, a healer and a counselor. He reminds us of God’s mercy and love. He instructs\, encourages and guides us towards living a fuller Christian life. He prescribes a penance\, not as a punishment\, but as a way for us to be purified and consoled. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow often should I go to confession?\n\n\n\n\nWe are encouraged to confess our sins whenever we realize that we have seriously strayed from the Lord’s way\, but at least once per year. Because we receive so much grace from this mystery\, it is a shame not to take advantage of it when it is available to us. Frequent Confession makes a person spiritually sound\, capable of resisting temptation; and it increases their vigour in the spiritual struggle. Appropriate occasions for Confession are the [four] fasts of the liturgical year\, during which\, according to Church custom\, the whole family approaches the Holy Mystery of Confession. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConfession Preparation Checklist\n\n\n\n\n1. Pray that the Holy Spirit guide you as you prepare for this mystery. \n2. Give thanks to God for the many gifts and graces you have received. \n3. Examine your conscience by reviewing how you have acted toward all people\, creatures\, and creation\, what you have talked about and what you have neglected to do. \n4. Think of any good you may have done and give thanks and glory to God. Pray that you will be strengthened and that you will continue to do good. \n5. If you have done anything sinful\, admit that you have committed a sin. Repent (express sorrow and have the intention of not doing these things again) and pray for forgiveness. To participate in this mystery\, you must be sorry for your sins and you must have a change of heart. \n6. Resolve to ask forgiveness of anyone you may have offended by these actions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn Examination of Conscience\n\n\n\n\n(Exert from Christ Our Pascha) Preparation for Confession requires a prayerful examination of one’s conscience. This consists of aligning our life with the divine commandments\, the Church’s precepts\, and the Gospel Beatitudes. Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky teaches: \nA good Confession requires\, perhaps\, a lengthier preparation.\nBefore holy Confession we should beseech God in prayer for the\ngift of repentance\, the gift of heartfelt tears. Maybe there is even a\nneed to fast\, since you know what Jesus Christ said: “This kind can\ncome out only through prayer and fasting” [see Mk 9:29]. There\nare sins that cannot be expelled from the soul without fasting\,\nwithout prayer. \nAn important condition of Confession is sincere repentance\, the desire to change one’s life. This means having contrition\, or sorrow for sins\, and a resolution to make amends. Sincere repentance is first of all realizing that one is a sinner in need of God’s forgiveness\, and seeing that one’s sins have caused a turning away from God and rejection of his love. An important requisite of Confession is also reconciliation with one’s neighbour: “When you are offering your gift at the altar\, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you\, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister\, and then come and offer your gift” (Mt 5:23-24). \n\n\n\n\n1. You shall have no other gods besides me.\nHave I engaged in superstitious practices or involved in the occult? \nHave I denied the existence of God? \nHave I loved someone or something more than God? \n\n\n\n\n2. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.\nHave I used the name of God in cursing or blasphemy? \nHave my words\, actively or passively\, put down God\, the Church\, or people? \nHave I spoken about the Faith\, the Church\, the saints\, or sacred things with hate? \n\n\n\n\n3. Remember the Sabbath day (the Lord’s Day)\, to keep it holy.\nShop\, labor\, or do business unnecessarily on Sunday or other Holy Days of Obligation? \nSet time aside each day for personal prayer to God? \nDo I go to Divine Liturgy every Sunday? \n\n\n\n\n4. Honour your father and your mother.\nDo I show my parents due respect? \nHave I neglected the needs of my parents in their old age or in their time of need? \nHave I obeyed all that my parents reasonably asked of me? \n\n\n\n\n5. You shall not kill.\nHave I harmed another through physical\, verbal\, or emotional means\, including gossip or manipulation of any kind? \nHave I recklessly endangered my life or health\, or others\, by my actions? \nBeen mean to\, quarreled with\, or willfully hurt someone? \n\n\n\n\n6. You shall not commit adultery.\nHave I purchased\, viewed\, or made use of pornography? \nMade uninvited and unwelcome sexual advances toward another? Have I ever considered or committed sexual assault onto another individual? \nHave I purposely dressed immodestly? \n\n\n\n\n7. You shall not steal.\nHave I envied others on account of their possessions? \nHave I deliberately defaced\, destroyed or lost another’s property? \nHave I failed to repay a debt or stolen from another? \n\n\n\n\n8. You shall not bear false witness.\nHave I lied? \nKnowingly and willfully deceived another? \n\n\n\n\n9. You shall not covet [desire] your neighbour’s wife [spouse].\nHave I honored my spouse with my full affection and exclusive love? \nHave I committed adultery? \n\n\n\n\n10. You shall not covet [desire] anything that is your neighbour’s.\nAm I content with my own means and needs\, or do I compare myself to others unnecessarily? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to Celebrate the Mystery of Repentance (Confession)\n\n\n\n\nAfter you have prepared for your confession\, go to the confessional. \nApproaching Confession\, the penitent receives from the priest a blessing for the Confession. The penitent signs himself or herself with the sign of the holy cross. The penitent then sincerely confesses all the sins committed since the last Confession and accepts the guidance of the confessor as well as the assigned penance (epitimia). The priest then pronounces the absolution of sins. The epitimia is an ascetic exercise in virtues that are contrary to the sins that had been committed. The aim is to eradicate the habitual inclination to sin and to correct its consequences. \nPenitent: (+) In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Glory to Jesus Christ! I confess to Almighty God\, one in the Holy Trinity\, to Mary the Mother of God\, to all the saints\, and to you\, Father\, all my sins. \nTell your sins to the priest. Remember to make a full and honest confession. Everything you say is confidential. You may choose to list your sins or to talk about where you are struggling in your life. Don’t make excuses. Don’t try to disguise or minimize. Let go of your pride. When you are finished say: \nThese are all the sins I remember. I am truly sorry for all my sins. \nFather will speak to you\, giving you advice and guidance. \n  \nHe will give you a penance. When he is finished he will ask you to make your act of contrition while he absolves you through the power of Christ. Know\, with certainty\, that at this time\, God is forgiving you\, healing you and giving you strength to become like Jesus: \n(+) God\, be merciful to me a sinner. \n(+) God cleanse me of my sins and have mercy on me. \n(+) I have sinned without number\, forgive me\, O Lord. \nThe priest will dismiss you with a blessing. Try to spend some time in prayer\, thanking God for his love and mercy. Perform the penance as soon as possible. \n  \nIf a person has no desire to repent\, and refuses to amend the damage\, caused by sin\, he or she thereby becomes incapable of receiving forgiveness of sins\, even if they have come to Confession. In order to help such a person understand their lack of repentance and motivate them to true conversion\, the priest can refuse him or her absolution. Anyone intentionally concealing grave sins in Confession remains unhealed and commits a sin of sacrilege. If a person in such a state approaches Holy Communion\, he or she offends the Lord and commits a grave sin. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Significance of Confession in the Spiritual Life\n\n\n\n\n(Exert from Christ Our Pascha) In the Holy Mystery of Repentance\, God grants the Christian growth in the grace of Baptism and the virtues. The closer we come to God\, we see our own weaknesses and sinfulness more clearly and thus feel the need for more frequent Confession. According to the spiritual Fathers\, if a person confesses rarely\, he or she gradually loses the capacity to distinguish between good and evil\, which has negative consequences for his or her whole life. \n\n\n\n\nWhat is Confession in the Ukrainian Catholic Church? – Edmonton Eparchy \nor you can visit other websites \nRepentance-Guide-for-Adults-for-website-revised-2019.pdf \nThe Holy Mystery of Repentance (or Confession) – St Luke Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church \nI \nI

SUMMARY:Christmas Eve - Great Complains
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, December 24\, 2025 – Christmas Eve/ Святвечір – The Nativity of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Great Compline @ 9:00 p.m. the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil @ 10:00 p.m. \nAbout certain Christmas Season celebrations or Traditions you can read on our Eparchial of Edmonton Website and Christmas Traditions: https://eeparchy.com/?=christmas+traditions \n \nFor those unfamiliar with the Ukrainian Catholic Church traditions\, the Holy Supper on Christmas Eve holds a unique and significant place in Ukrainian households. In response to a query about this cherished tradition\, we embark on a journey to unravel the intricacies of the Holy Supper\, its symbolic dishes\, and the rich customs that accompany this festive occasion. \n  \nThe Twelve Lenten Dishes\nDiverging from typical evening meals\, the Holy Supper features twelve Lenten dishes\, symbolizing the twelve Apostles who gathered at the Last Supper. These dishes are meticulously prepared with vegetable shortening or cooking oil\, excluding all animal fat\, milk\, and milk products. This dietary restriction aligns with the period of fasting leading up to Christmas Day\, culminating after the midnight or morning church service on Christmas Eve. \n  \nVariations of Svyatij Vechir (Holy Supper)\nWhile the basic structure of the Holy Supper is preserved\, each household incorporates its unique touch. One common practice is placing straw under the tablecloth and the table itself\, accompanied by a sheaf of wheat called “didukh.” Tied with a vibrant rushnik (embroidered towel)\, the didukh is placed on the table by the father or senior male present at the beginning of the dinner\, symbolizing the gathering of the clan. \n  \nSymbolism of the Pylypivka Wreath\nTo add depth to the fasting experience\, many households embrace the practice of praying with a Pylypivka wreath. This circular arrangement symbolizes the eternal nature of God\, with evergreen branches representing the eternal life brought by Jesus. Candles on the wreath symbolize Christ as the light of the world\, each with a specific meaning such as love\, faith\, and hope. \n  \nThe Holy Supper Ritual\nThe order of dishes varies\, but common elements include the prosphora (blessed at the Vigil)\, kutya\, and twelve other meatless and dairy-free dishes such as fish\, varenyky\, and kapusta. A significant tradition involves leaving one place empty at the table\, both in remembrance of those departed before us and in the belief that an angel might appear in the guise of a beggar. \nThree loaves of bread\, known as kolach\, are baked and stacked with a candle in the middle\, symbolizing Christ. The candle is lit during the meal blessing and remains so until the end of dinner. \n  \nChristmas Eve Timeline and Traditions\nThe timeline of St. Philip’s Fast\, leading up to Christmas Eve\, includes various feasts such as the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew\, the Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple\, and the Feast of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. \nBeyond the Holy Supper\, additional traditions include flinging kutya on the ceiling for good luck\, walking around the house three times with kutya while singing the Christmas troparion\, and providing extra feed\, straw\, and kutya to livestock. \n  \nThe Spirit of Hospitality\nOne enduring tradition emphasizes hospitality to those in need. Families ensure that no one spends Christmas Eve alone\, inviting neighbors\, friends\, and anyone without family to join in the celebration. This practice is rooted in the belief that on this holy night\, Mary and Joseph were given hospitality in a cave\, setting an example for extending kindness to others. \n  \nAlternate Versions and Regional Practices\nVariations of the Holy Supper exist\, reflecting the diverse cultural tapestry of Ukraine. Some families scatter straw under the table to remember the poverty of the Holy Family\, while others emphasize the symbolic act of everyone wearing shoes or slippers\, signifying wealth in celebrating the birth of the Savior. \nIn some homes\, a chain wrapped around the table legs is believed to keep the abundance found on the table within the family throughout the coming New Year. \n  \nCaroling and Vertep Puppet Theater\nThe celebration extends beyond the dinner table\, with joyful caroling playing a significant role. Ukrainian Christmas songs or carols\, known as koliadky and shchedrivky\, are sung throughout the Christmas season\, bringing festive melodies to communities. \nAnother lively tradition is the Vertep\, a Ukrainian puppet theater that enacts the Nativity and includes merry interludes depicting secular life. Originating in the late 16th century\, Vertep performances declined in the mid-19th century but have seen a revival in the 20th century as a zhyvyi ‘live’ Vertep\, re-creating the traditional village performances. \n  \nIn conclusion\, the Holy Supper on Christmas Eve is a culmination of rich traditions\, symbolic dishes\, and heartfelt customs that embody the spirit of Ukrainian Christmas. It is a time of joy\, reflection\, and hospitality\, inviting both family and strangers to share in the festive celebration of the birth of Christ. As we delve into the depths of these cherished practices\, we witness the enduring cultural and spiritual significance that makes Ukrainian Christmas a truly special and meaningful occasion. \nand\n\n\nIn the enchanting realm of Ukraine\, where spirituality dances with mysticism and the joy of communal feasting holds profound significance\, Christmas celebrations unfold as a captivating blend of rich traditions and symbolic rituals. \n  \nSpirituality Meets Culinary Delights\nUkrainians\, known for their deep spiritual connection and a hearty appetite for life\, bring these elements together in a harmonious symphony during the Christmas season. Christmas Eve\, a day of great importance\, is ushered in by a six-week lenten period commencing on the Feast of St. Philip. During this time\, the air is void of pre-Christmas celebrations\, and carols remain unsung until the eve of Christmas. \nIn a departure from the mainstream European celebration on Christmas Day\, Ukrainians reserve their grand festivities for Christmas Eve\, lovingly referred to as Vilia. It is a time of abundance\, spirituality\, and an almost magical ambiance\, seamlessly weaving together pre-Christian customs\, the realities of hardworking peasant life\, and the essence of Christian faith. \n  \nUkrainian Christmas Feast: A Banquet of Symbolism\nFor Ukrainian peasants\, burdened by the hardships of their daily lives\, Christmas becomes a respite—a time of plenty and joy. Vilia revolves around two central events: the Midnight Divine Liturgy and the holy supper\, or sviatyj vechir\, featuring 12 meticulously prepared meatless dishes symbolizing the 12 Apostles. Some believe these dishes mirror the 12 months of the year\, echoing ancient pagan influences. \nThe preparations for Vilia traditionally commence before sunrise\, with the father or hospodar taking center stage in crafting the most important dish\, kutya. Made by boiling whole wheat until tender and combining it with honey\, poppy seeds\, and nuts\, kutia symbolizes the people’s connection to the land\, their dependence on it\, and serves as a reminder of Holy Communion. Poppy seeds\, regarded as a magical herb\, add an extra layer of symbolism. \nThe culinary journey continues with the kolach\, a braided circular loaf of bread representing eternity. Placed at the center of the table with a candle\, borsch (beet soup) follows\, setting the stage for the remaining 12 dishes\, a delightful mix of fish\, pyrohy (dumplings)\, holupchi (cabbage rolls)\, and traditional dishes featuring dried summer vegetables and fruits. \n\n\n\n\n\nSymbolic Preparations and Customs\nBeyond the culinary extravaganza\, meticulous preparations unfold throughout the day. Homes receive a thorough cleaning\, with no housework undertaken for the next 12 days. On farms\, animals receive extra care as a gesture of appreciation for their contribution to the family’s welfare and recognition of their role as the first witnesses to the newborn Baby Jesus. \nSymbolic elements such as hay under the tablecloth\, straw on the floor\, cloves of garlic at table corners\, and an extra place setting left empty during the meal\, symbolizing departed family members\, reflect ancient traditions and protect against evil spirits. No one is turned away on Christmas Eve\, and a candle burning in the window welcomes not only Baby Jesus but any passerby. \nThe didukh\, a sheaf of wheat specially reserved during the harvest\, takes center stage during Christmas. As the hospodar recites a prayer\, the didukh\, symbolizing the family’s ancestors and the bounty provided by the earth\, is placed in a corner of honour. Traditionally burned on Jordan or Epiphany\, it releases spirits who return to heaven. \n  \nThe First Star and Traditions Unveiled\nAs the magical moment approaches\, the youngest child eagerly watches for the first star\, reminiscent of the star over Bethlehem. Only upon spotting it does sviatyj vechir begin. A prayer is shared\, followed by the traditional Christmas greeting “Christ is Born!” Kutia is served individually to each person\, mimicking Holy Communion. The leisurely meal is followed by gift exchanges and carol singing\, culminating in the Midnight Liturgy. \n  \nEmbracing Variations and Folk Traditions\nIn celebrating Ukrainian Catholic Christmas traditions\, it’s crucial to recognize the rich tapestry of variations that exist. Folk traditions\, by nature\, are diverse\, and this is just one variation among many. \nIn essence\, Ukrainian Christmas Eve is a celebration that transcends time\, a delightful fusion of spirituality\, symbolism\, and culinary delights—a cherished journey into the heart of tradition\, love\, and joy. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Rosary Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for the Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy\nAs we gather in faith\, we invite you to participate in our Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy\, a special opportunity to prepare our hearts and minds for worship.
