SUMMARY:COR - Morning Prayer and Coffee for the Man
DESCRIPTION:COR – Morning Prayer and Coffee for Men\nA Journey of the Heart for Catholic Men\nThe Knights of Columbus continue to invite Catholic men into a deeper life of faith through the COR initiative — a spiritual formation movement whose name comes from the Latin word for “heart.” COR is more than a program or study group. It is an invitation to conversion of heart\, fraternity\, prayer\, and authentic Catholic discipleship. \nAt our parish\, COR has become a place where men gather not only to learn about the faith\, but to encounter Christ personally through prayer\, Scripture\, brotherhood\, and the sacramental life of the Church. \nEach month\, we begin with the Divine Liturgy at 9:00 AM\, placing Christ and the Eucharist at the center of everything we do. From the altar we continue into fellowship over coffee and open discussion — simple\, honest conversations about faith\, family\, struggles\, vocation\, and daily Christian life. \nThere is no pressure and no expectation of perfection. COR is a place for ordinary men seeking to grow closer to God together. \nWhat is COR?\nCOR was launched by the Knights of Columbus as a parish-based initiative for Catholic men centered on: \n\nprayer\nformation\nfraternity\nvirtuous leadership\nsacramental life\nevangelization\n\nThe purpose of COR is simple: to help men become better sons\, husbands\, fathers\, grandfathers\, brothers\, and disciples of Jesus Christ. \nThe heart of COR is not activism or meetings alone\, but spiritual transformation rooted in Christ. Men today carry many burdens — work\, family responsibilities\, loneliness\, uncertainty\, cultural confusion\, and often silent suffering. COR seeks to provide a place where men rediscover that they do not walk alone. \nRooted in Prayer and the Eucharist\nEvery authentic renewal in the Church begins with prayer. \nFor that reason\, our gatherings are intentionally centered around: \n\nDivine Liturgy and the Eucharist\nSacred Scripture\nprayer and reflection\nfraternal conversation\nongoing conversion of heart\n\nWe strive to build fraternity not merely as friendship\, but as spiritual brotherhood rooted in Christ. \nAs men pray together\, they begin to support one another more deeply — learning how to carry burdens\, strengthen families\, and live the Gospel with courage and humility. \nMen of the Word – A Bible Study for Catholic Men\nOur present formation journey continues through the Knights of Columbus study series: \nMen of the Word – A Bible Study for Catholic Men\nThis study invites men to encounter Christ through Sacred Scripture and to rediscover the foundations of Catholic faith. \nSession One: The Good News\nWe began at the very heart of Christianity: the Gospel. \nReflecting on the Road to Emmaus\, the proclamation of the Apostles\, and Christ revealed in Word and Sacrament\, we were reminded that Christianity does not begin with rules\, politics\, or mere moralism. \nChristianity begins with Jesus Christ. \nThe Good News is that: \n\nChrist is risen\nsin and death are conquered\nGod seeks us personally\nwe are loved\, forgiven\, and called into communion with Him\n\nBefore a man can truly lead others\, he must first encounter Christ himself. \nSession Two: Created for God\nFrom there\, we continued into the deeper question of identity: \nWho am I? \nModern society often tells men that their worth comes from success\, money\, power\, productivity\, or social status. The Gospel teaches something radically different. \nEvery human person is created intentionally in the image and likeness of God. \nOur dignity comes first from being beloved sons of the Heavenly Father. \nThis truth changes how we understand: \n\nmarriage and fatherhood\nwork and responsibility\nsuffering and sacrifice\nleadership and service\nprayer and vocation\n\nSaint Augustine wrote: \n\n“Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” \n\nCOR calls men back to that truth. \nContinuing the Journey\nAs we continue our formation\, future sessions and reflections will gradually explore: \n\nSacred Scripture\nthe Creed\nthe Commandments\nprayer and spiritual life\nthe Liturgical Year\nCatholic moral teaching\nvirtue and authentic masculinity\nfamily life and servant leadership\nthe teachings of the Church\nthe lives of the saints\nevangelization and missionary discipleship\n\nOur long-term spiritual vision also draws from our local parish journey: \nA Fisherman’s Guide to Faith and Life\nInspired by Alberta’s waters\, seasons\, and the Gospel image of Christ calling fishermen\, this path reminds us that faith is learned patiently — often quietly — through perseverance\, discipline\, prayer\, and trust in God. \nLike fishermen casting nets into deeper waters\, men are called to go deeper spiritually: \n\ndeeper prayer\ndeeper faith\ndeeper responsibility\ndeeper trust in Christ\n\nBreathing with Both Lungs\nOur spirituality is deeply rooted in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic tradition and the beauty of the Christian East: \n\nDivine Liturgy\nicons\nfasting\nprayer of the heart\nreverence and mystery\n\nAt the same time\, we embrace the fullness of the Catholic Church\, drawing from both Eastern and Western traditions — “breathing with both lungs\,” as taught by Pope John Paul II. \nThis allows men from many backgrounds to feel welcome and spiritually nourished. \nA Place for Newcomers and Immigrants\nOur parish community includes many newcomers to Canada\, especially families affected by war\, displacement\, and instability. \nFor many men\, COR becomes more than a study group. It becomes: \n\na place of friendship\na source of stability\na spiritual home\na peaceful environment for prayer and conversation\nan opportunity to grow in confidence and belonging\n\nMen are able to share experiences\, support one another\, and gradually build community in a new country. \nWhy COR Matters Today\nModern men often struggle silently with questions such as: \n\nWho am I?\nWhat is my purpose?\nHow do I become a good husband or father?\nHow do I lead spiritually?\nHow do I remain faithful in a difficult world?\nWhere can I find peace?\n\nCOR creates space for those questions. \nIt is a place where men can: \n\npray together\nask honest questions\nlearn the faith\ngrow in virtue\nstrengthen one another\nrediscover hope in Christ\n\nAn Invitation\nOur gatherings currently take place once each month. As fraternity and participation grow\, we hope to continue expanding opportunities for prayer\, study\, fellowship\, and service. \nWhether you are: \n\na lifelong Knight\,\na practicing Catholic seeking renewal\,\na newcomer to Canada\,\nsomeone returning to the Church\,\nor simply searching for deeper meaning —\n\nyou are welcome. \nCome pray with us.Come share coffee and conversation.Come rediscover Christ.Come grow heart to heart — COR to COR. \nIn Christ\, \nFr. Slavko Dumeč (о. \n«Чоловіки Слова» – біблійна формація для чоловіків\nНаша теперішня духовна подорож продовжується через програму: \nMen of the Word – A Bible Study for Catholic Men\nЦей курс допомагає чоловікам зустріти Христа через Святе Письмо та заново відкрити основи католицької віри. Following the prayer service\, youth will take part in an open and meaningful discussion about remaining close to God during the summer\, keeping good values and friendships\, attending church\, and being a Christian witness wherever life takes us — whether at work\, school\, camps\, vacations\, or time spent with friends and family. \nThe gathering will also include pizza\, games\, fellowship\, and time to simply enjoy being together in a welcoming and faith-filled atmosphere. \nThese monthly youth gatherings at St. Nicholas Parish\, organized and led by seminarian Marko Koval from Holy Spirit Seminary in Edmonton with the support of parish priest Fr. Slavko Dumeč\, have become a place where young people can ask questions\, grow spiritually\, and build lasting friendships rooted in faith. \nThis May gathering will also serve as the final youth meeting of the season before the summer break\, with regular meetings expected to resume again in September. \nWhether you are already active in parish life or simply searching for a place to belong\, all youth are invited to come and bring friends. SUMMARY:Rosary Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for the Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy\nAs we gather in faith\, we invite you to participate in our Rosary Prayer Before Divine Liturgy\, a special opportunity to prepare our hearts and minds for worship. This sacred time of prayer is open to all\, providing a space for reflection\, devotion\, and community connection. \nA Sacred Tradition \nThe rosary is a powerful form of prayer that has been cherished in the Catholic tradition for centuries. SUMMARY:Monday after Pentecost\, Divine Liturgy @ 10 AM
DESCRIPTION:Monday after Pentecost (Monday of the Holy Spirit)\nA Day of the Ongoing Life of the Spirit in the Church\nThe Monday following the great Feast of Pentecost occupies a unique and deeply symbolic place in the liturgical life of the Church. Often referred to in the Byzantine tradition as the Monday of the Holy Spirit\, this day does not stand apart from Pentecost but rather extends and deepens its mystery. \nPentecost is not understood in the Church as a single historical moment that ends in the past. Rather\, it is the revelation of a reality that continues: the permanent presence and action of the Holy Spirit within the Church. \nAs the Catechism teaches\, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit “never ceases\,” for it marks the beginning of the “time of the Church\,” in which the Spirit leads the faithful into communion with Christ and into the fullness of truth. \n\nPentecost Continued: The Life of the Spirit\nThe Monday after Pentecost emphasizes what the Church already lives daily: that the Holy Spirit is not only sent once upon the Apostles\, but remains actively present in the Body of Christ. \nThe Church prays: \n\n“Heavenly King\, Advocate\, Spirit of Truth\,Who are everywhere present and fill all things\,Treasury of blessings and Giver of life\,come and dwell within us\, cleanse us of all impurity\, and save our souls.” \n\nThis ancient invocation expresses the heart of the Church’s experience: the Holy Spirit is not distant\, but indwelling\, purifying\, and life-giving. \nThus\, Monday after Pentecost is not a new feast separate from Pentecost\, but its liturgical continuation\, expressing in prayer and hymn what the Church believes always: the Spirit remains with us. \n\nThe Church as the Living Fruit of Pentecost\nThe readings and hymnography of this season consistently reveal the transformation brought by the Holy Spirit: \n\nlight overcoming darkness\nwisdom replacing confusion\nunity overcoming division\nprayer becoming the language of the Church\n\nSaint Paul’s exhortation to “be filled with the Spirit” expresses this ongoing reality. The Christian life is not merely shaped by moral effort\, but by participation in the life of the Spirit\, who renews the believer from within. \nIn this sense\, Pentecost is not only remembered—it is lived. \n\nUnity Restored in the Holy Spirit\nOne of the central theological themes of Pentecost is the healing of division. The Church contrasts the confusion of languages at Babel with the unity created at Pentecost. \nWhere humanity once experienced fragmentation\, the Holy Spirit creates communion. Not uniformity\, but unity in love and truth. \nThis unity is not imposed externally; it is the fruit of the Spirit dwelling within hearts\, forming the Church into one Body in Christ. \n\nThe Ongoing Mission of the Church\nThe Gospel proclamation of Christ—“Where two or three are gathered in my name\, I am there among them”—reveals the continuing mission of the Church in the Holy Spirit. \nThe Church is not a historical memory of Christ\, but His living presence in the world. The Spirit makes Christ present in the community of believers\, especially in prayer\, sacramental life\, and reconciliation. \nThus\, Monday after Pentecost invites the faithful to recognize that: \n\nevery liturgy is Pentecostal\nevery prayer is Spirit-breathed\nevery act of love is made possible by grace\n\n\nA Day of Quiet Illumination\nWhile Pentecost is marked by solemn celebration\, fire\, and joy\, the Monday after Pentecost carries a quieter tone. It is the Church’s contemplative echo of the feast—a moment to remain in the presence of the Spirit and allow His work to continue within us. \nIt reminds the faithful that the Christian life is not only about receiving the Spirit once\, but about remaining open to Him daily. \n\nConclusion\nThe Monday after Pentecost\, or Monday of the Holy Spirit\, is not a separate feast but a theological continuation of Pentecost itself. It proclaims that the Church is always living in the time of the Spirit—guided\, sanctified\, and renewed. \nThe Church therefore continues her prayer with simplicity and depth: \n\nCome\, O Holy Spirit\, and dwell within us. \n\nThis is not only the prayer of Pentecost\, but the prayer of every day in the life of the Church. \n

SUMMARY:Letters to the Blessed Virgin Mary – A May Devotion of Prayer\, Trust\, and Entrustment
DESCRIPTION:🌿 Letters to the Blessed Virgin Mary – A May Devotion of Prayer\, Trust\, and Entrustment\nSaint Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Parish\, Edmonton\nThe month of May has long been associated in Christian tradition with special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary Theotokos (Blessed Virgin Mary). During this season\, the faithful are invited to deepen their love for the Mother of God through prayer\, Marian hymns\, processions\, the Rosary\, and personal acts of devotion. \nIn the beauty and renewal of spring\, many Christians have seen a reflection of the spiritual beauty of the Virgin Mary\, through whom Christ\, the Author of Life\, entered the world. For this reason\, May gradually became a month especially dedicated to prayerful devotion to the Mother of God\, who always leads the faithful toward her Son\, Jesus Christ. \n\n✉️ A Parish Devotion of Entrustment\nThroughout the month of May\, our parish continues the devotional practice of writing personal and anonymous letters to the Blessed Mother. \nThis practice was also experienced during seminary formation in Rome as a personal way of expressing prayer and entrusting one’s intentions to the maternal intercession of Mary. While this exact custom is a local parish devotion\, it is inspired by broader Catholic traditions of Marian trust and by the simple\, heartfelt spirituality encouraged by Saint John Bosco and the Salesian tradition. \nWriting a letter can help express prayers and concerns that are often carried silently in the heart. This devotion is not a sacrament and should not be understood as a magical practice or as guaranteeing any particular outcome. Rather\, it is a personal and symbolic act of prayer through which the faithful ask the Mother of God to intercede for them before her Son. \nA basket has been placed before the iconostasis where the faithful may place their letters throughout the month. \n\n🌸 Spirit of the Letters\nThe letters are intended as acts of: \n\nprayer\nrepentance\nthanksgiving\nspiritual healing\nreconciliation\ntrust in God\nand loving entrustment to the care of the Mother of God\n\nYou are encouraged to write about: \n\nspiritual struggles and temptations\nhealing of relationships and family life\nfears\, anxieties\, and burdens\ngratitude for blessings received\nprayers for loved ones and those who suffer\ngrowth in faith\, hope\, peace\, and love\n\nThis devotion should remain centered on spiritual life and conversion of heart rather than worldly or purely material desires. \nFor forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God\, the faithful are also encouraged to participate regularly in the Holy Mystery of Repentance (Confession) and the sacramental life of the Church. \n\n✉️ How to Prepare Your Letter\nPlease do not write your name or surname anywhere in the letter or on the envelope. God already knows your intentions\, and we entrust our prayers to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. \nIf praying for another person\, a first name may be included if desired\, but this is not necessary. \nChildren\, youth\, and adults are all warmly invited to participate. \nYou are encouraged to place your letter in an envelope and\, if you wish\, decorate it with drawings\, flowers\, crosses\, icons\, colors\, or other symbols of faith and prayer. \nThis is not about artistic talent or appearance\, but about offering a small part of your heart\, time\, and attention to God through the intercession of the Mother of God. Just as we often take special care when preparing a gift for someone we love\, so too this small effort can become part of our prayer. \nA thoughtfully prepared letter can reflect sincerity\, reverence\, and the importance of the intentions we place before the Mother of God. \nYou may also write a respectful title on the envelope such as: \n\n“Blessed Virgin Mary”\n“Mother of God”\n“Theotokos”\n“Queen of Heaven”\nor another traditional Christian title expressing love and reverence for the Mother of God.\n\nNo special format is required. What matters most is a sincere and humble heart before God. \n\n🎶 Special Participation of Visiting Students\nOn Sunday\, May 31\, we will also be blessed to welcome visitors from Chesterton Academy of St. Isidore\, who will prayerfully join our parish community for the Divine Liturgy. \nThe students will lend their voices in singing portions of the Divine Liturgy together with our parish choir\, helping to enrich the beauty of our common prayer. They too will participate in this Marian devotion by bringing their own prayer intentions in the form of letters to the Blessed Mother. \nTheir presence will be a beautiful witness of young people praying together with the Church and entrusting their hearts to God through the intercession of the Mother of God. \n\n🔥 Conclusion of the Month of May\nOn Sunday\, May 31\, following the Divine Liturgy\, the parish will gather for a short prayerful procession to the parking lot\, where the collected letters will be respectfully burned. \nThis act should be understood only as a symbolic sign of surrender and entrustment to God — similar to the biblical image of incense rising in prayer before the Lord. The burning of the letters does not “send” prayers to heaven and does not guarantee any particular outcome. Rather\, it serves as a visible reminder that the faithful place their concerns into the hands of God through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. \nAs the smoke rises\, we are reminded to surrender our hearts\, burdens\, hopes\, and prayers to the mercy and providence of God. \nMay the Mother of God intercede for us and lead us always closer to her Son\, our Lord Jesus Christ. \nPlease share this invitation with your family members\, friends\, children\, and loved ones. All are welcome to participate in this beautiful month of prayer and Marian devotion.
